Questions we get every week

Frequently asked questions

Are these guides written by the technicians who do the repairs?
Yes. Every guide is written from what arrives at our bench in Singapore, not from a keyword list. Where a guide describes a fault, it describes one we diagnose regularly; where it gives a diagnostic sequence, it is the sequence we run ourselves.
Can I use these guides to repair my own laptop?
The diagnostic halves, yes, and we would rather you did. Establishing whether a laptop has a power fault, a display fault or a storage fault costs nothing and takes ten minutes. The repair halves involve ESD control, hot air and microsoldering; those we describe so you can judge whether a workshop is doing them properly, not so you attempt them.
Do the guides apply to MacBooks as well as Windows laptops?
Both. Some faults are universal — swollen batteries, dead charging ICs, thermal throttling. Others are Apple-specific, like flexgate on the 2016–2017 MacBook Pro or the soldered, encrypted storage on T2 and Apple silicon machines. The guides say which is which.
Why do some guides tell me not to repair the machine?
Because sometimes that is the honest answer. A ten-year-old laptop needing a board repair and a screen is not worth the money, and a workshop that never says so is not being straight with you. Where a repair stops making sense, the guide says where the line is.

Read a guide, then get a real diagnosis

Guides narrow the possibilities. A bench power supply and a microscope settle them. Send us the model and the symptom.
