Air, Pro, Retina and Apple silicon. Flexgate, staingate, butterfly keyboards, soldered storage, and what Apple will and will not do.
Why MacBook repair is a different problem
Everything that is true of a Windows laptop is true of a MacBook, plus one thing that changes the whole calculation: on T2 and Apple silicon machines the storage is soldered to the logic board and cryptographically bound to the secure enclave on that specific board. Replace the board and the data on the old one cannot be read, even though the memory chips are physically perfect.
That single fact should govern the order in which any MacBook repair is done. If the machine holds anything irreplaceable, board repair or data extraction comes before anyone fits a replacement board. These guides cover that, along with the generation-specific faults — flexgate on the 2016 and 2017 Retina Pros, butterfly keyboards, staingate, and the liquid damage that arrives a week after the spill.
