Laptop won't turn on? Work through it before you panic
A laptop that shows no sign of life is alarming, but it is far more often a charger, a port or a flat battery than a dead machine. This guide walks you through the safe checks you can do at home, what each symptom points to, and the point at which it is worth handing to a workshop.
Try a known-good charger, then a 30-second hard reset with the charger unplugged, then leave it charging for an hour and try again. If you still get no lights, no fan and no screen, the fault is most likely the charging port, the battery or the motherboard — none of which is a safe home fix, and all of which we can diagnose before you commit to anything.

What causes a laptop not to turn on
"Won't turn on" covers a few genuinely different situations, and telling them apart is most of the battle. A machine that is completely silent — no lights, no fans, no sound — has a power problem: nothing is reaching the board, or the board cannot start. A machine that lights up or spins its fan but never shows an image has power but is failing to start up, which is a different fault entirely. Before you do anything else, notice which of those two you have, because it changes everything that follows.
When a laptop is truly dead to the world, the cause is almost always one of five things. The charger or its cable has failed — the single most common cause, and the easiest to rule out. The charging port (the DC-in jack or USB-C connector) has worn, cracked or come loose from years of plugging in. The battery is completely flat or has failed outright, and on some models a dead battery blocks the machine from starting even on mains. There is a stuck power state that a hard reset will clear. Or, less often, there is a motherboard fault — a failed charging chip, a blown fuse or a shorted power rail. That last one sounds frightening but, in our workshop logs, accounts for only about one no-power case in five.

Safe fixes you can try yourself
Work through these in order. They are all safe, none of them involves opening the laptop, and between them they revive a large share of no-power machines. Stop at the first one that works.
- Check the charger and the wall socket. Look for a light on the charger brick or the plug. Try a different wall socket, and if you can, a different known-good charger of the correct type and wattage. A dead charger or a frayed cable is the single most common cause, and the cheapest to fix. Feel along the cable for kinks or a spongy section near the plug.
- Do a 30-second hard reset. Unplug the charger and remove every external device — USB drives, hubs, SD cards, second monitors. Press and hold the power button for a full 30 seconds to drain residual charge from the board. If your laptop has a removable battery, take it out, hold the power button for 30 seconds, then refit it. Reconnect only the charger and try to power on. This clears a stuck power state and is the single most effective home fix.
- Give a flat battery time to wake up. If the battery was completely drained, some laptops need a while on the charger before they will start. Leave it plugged in and untouched for 30 to 60 minutes, then try again without unplugging.
- Rule out the screen. If you get lights or fan noise but no image, connect an external monitor or TV with the right cable. An image on the external screen means the laptop is actually running and the fault is in the display or its cable, not the power. No image on either means an internal start-up fault.
- Look and listen for clues. A single or repeating beep pattern at power-on is a POST code, often pointing at memory. A faint fan spin that stops immediately suggests the board is trying but a rail is failing. Note what you see and hear — it genuinely helps a technician narrow the fault quickly.
- Check for a pinhole reset. Some laptops have a small recessed reset button on the base; a gentle press with a straightened paperclip for a few seconds can force a reset. Only do this if your model actually has one — do not poke random holes.
Do not open the laptop to "reseat" parts unless you know what you are doing, do not keep hammering the power button on a machine that had a liquid spill, and never try to force-charge with a mismatched or damaged charger. If the base or trackpad feels raised, stop using the machine — that is a swollen battery, which is a fire risk, and it needs proper handling.
How to test the charger and DC-in jack
Because a failed charger or a worn power socket is behind so many no-power laptops, it is worth knowing how to test them properly rather than guessing. Start with the brick itself. Most adapters carry a small LED that lights when the brick has mains power; no LED usually means a dead adapter or a broken lead, though a few designs only light once the laptop draws current, so treat a dark LED as a strong clue rather than final proof. Run your fingers slowly along the whole cable, paying attention to the last few centimetres before the plug and the point where the thin output lead meets the brick — those two spots flex every day and are where cables crack internally.
Wattage matters more than most people expect. A charger rated well below your laptop's requirement can light up and even trickle a little charge in, yet still leave the machine unable to boot because it cannot supply the current the board demands under load. Match the adapter to the original: read the output figure printed on the brick — 65W or 90W, for example — and use one that meets or exceeds it. This is a common trap on USB-C laptops, where a phone charger or a low-rated cable fits the port perfectly but delivers far too little power to start the machine.
The two connector styles fail in different ways. A traditional barrel jack — the round DC-in pin — wears at the socket: if the laptop only charges when you hold the plug at a certain angle, or you feel the connector wobble or click, the jack's solder joints have loosened and it needs re-soldering or replacing. A USB-C port instead fails when its tiny pins bend, when pocket lint packs the socket, or when a knock cracks its solder to the board. One safe home check: if your laptop has a second USB-C port, try charging from that; and a dry wooden toothpick will clear lint from a socket before you assume the worst.
Here is the useful rule this all builds towards. If a known-good, correctly rated charger gives you a steady brick LED and a charging light on the laptop, and yet the machine still will not start, you have effectively ruled the power supply out — the fault has moved inside, to the battery or the board. The four ways a laptop fails to start
"Won't turn on" hides four genuinely different failure patterns, and naming yours saves a technician real time. Read the list below and note which one matches — it is the single most useful thing you can tell us on the phone or over WhatsApp, and it maps neatly onto the fixes in our repair resource centre.
- No lights at all. You press the button and nothing happens — no LED, no fan tick, no sound whatsoever. This is a pure power fault: charger, port, battery, or a dead rail on the board. Work the charger and hard-reset checks above before anything else.
- Lights or fans, but no display. The machine clearly powers up — a keyboard backlight, a caps-lock light, a fan spinning — but the screen stays black. Power is fine; the fault sits in memory, the display, the backlight or the board. The external-monitor test tells you whether it is the panel or something deeper, and a genuine panel fault is a laptop screen replacement rather than a power job.
- POST then no boot. You see the maker's logo or a cursor, or the fans settle, but Windows never loads — it hangs, throws an error, or drops to a black screen with a blinking underscore. The hardware is largely alive; the fault is usually the storage drive or the operating system, and your files are almost always intact.
- Boot loop. The laptop powers on, gets partway, then restarts, over and over. That points at a power rail that sags under load, overheating, or corrupted firmware — a bench diagnosis rather than a home fix.
For the first two patterns, one extra check is worth doing if you are comfortable and your laptop has an accessible memory panel: reseat the RAM. With the machine off, unplugged and the battery removed, release the stick's side clips, lift it out, and refit it firmly until it clicks down. On a two-stick machine, try starting with only one module fitted, then only the other — a single failed stick can cause a no-display or beeping fault, and this isolates it. Brand reset routines differ in the small print but share one idea — cut every source of power and drain the board. On many Dell and HP laptops, holding the power button for 15 to 30 seconds with the charger unplugged performs that power drain, and some HP models add a dedicated battery-reset pinhole on the base. Lenovo ThinkPads often carry an emergency-reset pinhole for the internal battery, while most ASUS and Acer laptops respond to the same 30-second hold. When to get professional repair
If you have tried a known-good charger, a full hard reset and an hour on charge and the laptop still shows no light, no fan and no screen, the fault has moved beyond anything you can safely fix at home. At that point the cause is usually one of three things, and each needs a workshop:
- The charging port. A worn or cracked DC-in jack, or a damaged USB-C connector, stops power reaching the board. This is a common and very repairable fault — see our laptop charging port repair service.
- The battery. A failed or swollen pack can prevent boot and, if swollen, is a safety issue. Our battery replacement service handles these the same day on most models.
- The motherboard. A failed charging IC, a blown input fuse or a shorted rail needs component-level diagnosis on a bench power supply. A liquid spill is the one case where you should not wait at all. Why won't my laptop turn on even when it's plugged in?
If nothing happens when it is plugged in, the power is not reaching the board. The usual causes, in order of likelihood, are a faulty charger or cable, a worn or broken charging port, a completely flat or failed battery, or a fault on the motherboard's power circuit such as a charging IC or a shorted rail. Check the charger's light and try a known-good charger of the correct wattage first. If a good charger still produces no light and no fan, the fault is most likely in the charging port or on the board, and that needs a workshop.
How do I force a laptop that won't turn on to restart?
Do a hard reset. Unplug the charger, remove any external devices, and press and hold the power button for 30 seconds to drain residual charge. On laptops with a removable battery, take the battery out, hold the power button for 30 seconds, then refit it. On some models there is a small pinhole reset button underneath. Reconnect only the charger and try again. A hard reset clears a stuck power state and revives a surprising number of no-power laptops without any parts.
My laptop's power light comes on but the screen stays black. Is that the same problem?
Not quite. If you get lights or fan noise but no image, the machine is receiving power but not completing its start-up, which points at the memory, the display, the backlight or the board rather than the charging circuit. Try connecting an external monitor: if an image appears there, the fault is in the screen or its cable; if the external monitor is also blank, it is an internal start-up or board fault. Either way this is a different diagnosis from a laptop that shows no sign of life at all.
Could a dead battery stop my laptop from turning on even with the charger connected?
Sometimes, yes. A deeply discharged or failed battery can prevent some laptops from booting even on mains power, and a swollen battery can physically press on internal components. Leave it charging untouched for 30 to 60 minutes and try again, in case the pack was simply flat. If it still will not start, or if the trackpad or base feels raised, stop and have the battery checked — a swollen cell is a safety issue and should be replaced promptly.
Is a laptop that won't turn on worth repairing, or should I replace it?
Usually worth checking first, because a no-power laptop is far more often a cheap fault than a dead machine. In our intake, only about one no-power case in five is a genuinely dead board; the rest are chargers, ports, buttons and batteries that cost a fraction of a new laptop to fix. Will I lose my files if my laptop won't switch on?
Usually not. A laptop that will not power on almost always has intact storage — the files are sitting safely on a drive that is simply not being powered. Even when the motherboard is beyond repair, we can normally remove or read the drive and recover your data. If the files matter, avoid repeated power attempts and ask about data recovery, which images the drive on write-blocked hardware so nothing is written to a disk that may itself be failing.
Does the wattage of my charger matter if my laptop won't turn on?
