Why your iPhone overheats and how to fix it (2026): a Singapore workshop guide

In a city where the afternoon sun regularly pushes past 33°C, a warm iPhone is almost a way of life. But there is a real line between a phone that is warm because it is working hard and one that is hot because something is wrong — and knowing which side you are on saves both your battery and your money.

Warm vs hot: what is actually normal

An iPhone is designed to get warm. It is a powerful computer in a sealed aluminium and glass shell with no fan, so the only way it sheds heat is through its own body. Warmth during heavy tasks is physics, not a fault. Expect the phone to feel warm during:

  • Gaming or long video calls.
  • Turn-by-turn navigation with the screen on and GPS running, often in a hot car.
  • The first hour after setting up a new phone or a major iOS update, while it re-indexes photos in the background.
  • Fast or wireless charging, particularly in a warm room.

What is not normal is a phone that becomes too hot to hold, throws up the black "temperature" warning screen, or gets hot while idle in your pocket. Apple builds in a safety cut-off: when the internal temperature climbs too far, iOS dims the display, slows charging and can suspend the phone until it cools. What actually makes an iPhone overheat

Overheating has a short list of usual suspects, split into things you can fix yourself and things that need a workshop. On the bench they rank roughly like this:

  • Environmental heat — a car dashboard, charging under a pillow, or use in direct sun. The most common cause, and the easiest to fix.
  • A demanding or misbehaving app — a game, a stuck background process, or an app looping after an update.
  • Charging setup — a cheap or damaged cable, a non-genuine adapter, or a thick case trapping heat.
  • An ageing battery — a worn cell has higher internal resistance and runs hotter, so heat and poor battery life usually arrive together.
  • A charging-port fault — lint, corrosion or a damaged connector making a poor contact.
  • A board-level fault — a failing charging IC, a power-management chip, or hidden liquid corrosion.

Software fixes to try first

Most sudden overheating that appears out of nowhere is software, not hardware — and software is free to fix. Run through these in order before you spend a cent:

Find the app that is doing it. Open Settings → Battery and check the usage list. If one app shows an unusually high percentage or a lot of "background activity", that is your culprit. Force-close it; if it happens every time you open that one app, delete and reinstall it.

Restart the phone. A clean restart clears a stuck process better than almost anything else. Power it fully off, wait ten seconds, and switch it back on.

Check for a pending iOS update. Overheating bugs are common right after a major release and usually patched quickly, so install anything waiting under Settings → General → Software Update. Equally, if the heat began the moment an update finished, give it an hour to settle.

Turn off what you are not using. Background App Refresh, location services set to "Always", and constant push email all generate heat over a day. Trim them under Settings → General → Background App Refresh.

Charging heat: cables, cases and the port

Charging is the most common time an iPhone gets uncomfortably hot, so it deserves its own checklist. Some warmth while charging is normal; a phone that becomes hot to the touch is not.

Swap the cable and adapter. Cheap or counterfeit chargers are the number-one cause of charging heat we see. A genuine Apple or reputable USB-C adapter and an undamaged cable make a real difference — borrow a known-good charger and test.

Take the case off. A thick case is a blanket over a device that needs to breathe. If your phone runs hot on the charger, remove the case and charge on a hard, cool surface — never on a bed, sofa or under a pillow.

Look inside the port. Pockets and bags collect lint, and a compacted plug of dust makes a poor connection that heats up and slows charging. With the phone off, shine a light into the port; gentle removal only. If the port is corroded, loose, or the heat persists on a good charger, a worn connector is a common iPhone charging-port repair — far cheaper than a phone that cooks itself every night.

One safety note: if a phone becomes very hot while charging and the back glass feels like it is bulging, stop immediately and unplug it. That is a swollen battery, not just heat — see the battery section below and bring it in without delay.

When the battery is the culprit

Battery and heat have a two-way relationship: heat wears the battery, and a worn battery generates heat. As a cell ages its internal resistance rises, so it warms up more under load and holds less charge. That is why "my battery drains fast and my phone runs hot" is such a common pairing — two symptoms of one tired cell.

Check your battery under Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging. If Maximum Capacity has dropped below about 80%, or you see "Your battery's health has significantly degraded", the cell is a strong suspect and past the point where a replacement pays for itself.

The more serious version is a swollen battery. Heat and age can cause the cell to puff up — a screen lifting at one edge or a back that no longer sits flat. This is a safety issue: it should not be charged, pressed or punctured, and needs replacing promptly. When heat means a hardware fault

If you have swapped the charger, closed the apps, updated iOS, checked the battery and the phone still overheats — especially when idle — you are into hardware territory. The tell-tale pattern is a phone that gets hot doing nothing, or runs hot from the moment it powers on.

On the board, a handful of components can cause this:

  • The charging IC (Tristar/Tigris): the chip managing power in and out of the phone. As it fails it can draw excess current and run hot, sometimes with intermittent charging.
  • The power-management IC (PMIC): a fault here can leave rails powered that should be idle, generating steady heat even on a locked phone.

These are not download-and-fix problems. Diagnosing them means opening the phone, measuring current draw and thermal-imaging the board to find the hot component — the work of an iPhone motherboard repair specialist.
