The construction differs by generation — some batteries are held by pull-tab adhesive strips, others are firmly glued into the top case — but the principle is the same: read the battery honestly, confirm it is the battery and not the charging circuit, and fit a quality replacement. The signs your MacBook battery is due

A MacBook rarely fails its battery overnight; it tells you first. Watch for:

• "Service Recommended" in Battery Health. System Settings → Battery → Battery Health. "Normal" is fine; "Service Recommended" means the cells have degraded and it is time.
• Runtime that has collapsed — a charge that used to last all day now lasting an hour or two.
• Sudden shutdowns with charge still showing, or the MacBook dying the instant you unplug.
• Only runs on mains power — a strong sign the pack can no longer hold a useful charge.
• A high cycle count — most modern MacBook batteries are rated for around 1,000 cycles to 80% capacity; well beyond that, decline accelerates.
• Any swelling — a raised trackpad, a bowed base, a lid that will not sit flush. This is the urgent one, covered next.

Swollen batteries — read this first

Swollen batteries are one of the most common MacBook faults we see, particularly on machines a few years old and in Singapore's heat. We remove them safely, clean up any adhesive, check that the swelling has not damaged the trackpad or nearby components, and fit a quality replacement. Why MacBook batteries wear out

Every lithium battery ages; the questions are how fast and why. Charge cycles are the base clock — each full charge-and-discharge counts as one, and capacity fades as they accumulate. Heat is the accelerator, and it matters more than anything else in Singapore's climate: a MacBook left in a hot car, in direct sun, or run hard on a soft surface that blocks its cooling ages its battery far faster than cycles alone would. Sitting at 100% while hot is harder on a cell than a moderate charge range. And occasionally what looks like a dead battery is actually a charging-circuit fault on the board pretending to be one — which is why we confirm the diagnosis before quoting a battery, and can address the board on our MacBook logic board repair bench if that is the real cause.

Battery pack only, or the whole top case?

The other reason to bring a MacBook battery to an independent workshop is the same as with screens: choice. On many MacBook models — particularly the butterfly-keyboard-era Airs and Pros — the battery is bonded into the top case, and Apple's service approach is often to replace the entire top-case assembly: the battery, the keyboard, the trackpad and the aluminium palm rest all as one part. It is fast and clean, but you are paying for a keyboard and a trackpad that were perfectly fine.

Where the model allows, we replace the battery pack alone — carefully lifting the bonded cells out of the top case and fitting a new pack — so you pay for the battery, not the whole assembly. On models where the cells genuinely cannot be separated from the case safely, or where the keyboard or trackpad is also failing, a top-case replacement is the right call, and we will tell you so. Either way you get both figures in writing and our honest recommendation, rather than being pushed to the most expensive option by default.

Notes by model

The wedge MacBook Airs use pull-tab adhesive strips that, on a good day, lift cleanly. The 2016–2019 butterfly-era machines bond the battery firmly into the top case and need patience and controlled heat to remove without stressing the surrounding flex cables. The M1, M2 and M3 Airs and the current Pros use strong adhesive but are well understood on our bench. The 15-inch and 16-inch Pro packs are physically large, so both the part and the careful removal sit a little higher in the range. Our MacBook battery replacement process

1. Diagnosis. We read Battery Health and cycle count, load-test the pack, and confirm the fault is the battery and not the charger or the charging circuit. Free on walk-ins.
2. Written quote. The price and the realistic turnaround, in writing, before anything is opened. You approve it first.
3. Safe removal. The old pack is disconnected and removed carefully — adhesive softened and lifted rather than forced, and swollen cells handled with particular care.
4. Fit a quality replacement. A properly matched pack with a healthy battery-management circuit is fitted; we never use bargain no-brand cells.
5. Calibrate and load-test. The new battery is calibrated and run under load to confirm it holds and reports capacity correctly. We check that macOS shows the new pack as "Normal" in Battery Health, that charge and discharge behave as they should, and — where a swollen cell had lifted it — that the trackpad clicks cleanly again before the MacBook goes back to you.

Making the new battery last

A quality replacement should give several years of normal use. To get the most from it: keep it cool — heat is the number-one ager, so avoid hot cars, direct sun and blocked vents; leave Optimised Battery Charging on so macOS eases off holding 100% when it does not need to; avoid leaving it plugged in at 100% while it runs hot for days on end; and there is no need to run a modern battery flat to "recalibrate" it.
