MacBook M5 Pro vs M4 Pro: repairability and upgrade considerations

Two generations of MacBook Pro that look identical on the bench, and mostly are. The differences that matter are not on the spec sheet — they are in what you can change afterwards, what a workshop can replace, and which decisions become permanent the moment you click buy.

What actually changed between the two

Apple introduced the M5 Pro and M5 Max on 3 March 2026, with machines reaching customers on 11 March. They sit above the 14-inch MacBook Pro with the base M5 chip, which arrived five months earlier in October 2025. The M4 Pro they replace launched in October 2024. If you are cross-shopping the two, the first thing worth knowing is how little of the physical machine moved.

The enclosure is the same milled aluminium unibody, at the same dimensions and the same weight, closed with the same screws. The cooling hardware carries over — there is no vapour chamber, and the thermal gains come from the way the new chip is packaged rather than from new fans or ducting. The display is the same Liquid Retina XDR panel with ProMotion. Externally, and to a large extent internally, a technician who has worked on one has worked on the other.

What did change is the silicon and one repair policy. The M5 Pro is built on a third-generation 3nm process and, unlike every Apple laptop chip before it, splits the processor and graphics onto separate dies joined inside a single package. Memory bandwidth rises to roughly 307GB per second, the memory ceiling moves from 48GB to 64GB, base storage moves up to 1TB, and the three Thunderbolt 5 ports each get a dedicated controller. Alongside that, Apple started selling MacBook Pro batteries as standalone parts — a change that began with the base M5 in December 2025 and is the single most useful repairability development in years.

Everything else that governs the cost of owning one of these machines — soldered memory, soldered storage, glued batteries, calibration requirements — is unchanged. That is the honest headline, and the rest of this guide explains what it means in practice.

The upgrade question, settled once

We get asked this every week, so here it is plainly: neither machine can have its memory, storage or processor upgraded after purchase. Not by us, not by any independent workshop, and not by Apple. This is not a policy we can work around with the right tools or the right contacts. It is how the hardware is built.

It is worth being precise about why, because a lot of what gets repeated online is slightly wrong in a way that matters. The memory is not "part of the processor chip" in the sense of being etched into the same slice of silicon. It sits as separate, fully packaged DRAM chips mounted on the processor's own package substrate, immediately beside the processor die, underneath the same metal lid. That arrangement is what makes the bandwidth possible.

The consequence is a bus far wider than anything a socket could carry. A conventional laptop memory module presents 64 data lines. Apple's base chips run 128 lines, the M4 Pro runs 256, and the largest parts run 512. Hundreds of parallel lines switching at those rates need millimetre-scale trace lengths and tightly controlled impedance. Put a connector in the middle of that and the signal integrity collapses. There is a genuine engineering reason for on-package memory; it is not purely a commercial decision, even though the pricing of the memory tiers certainly is.

You will find a story from 2021 in which technicians in Guangzhou desoldered the memory and storage packages from an M1 MacBook Air and fitted larger ones, and macOS reported the new capacities. It happened. It has also never been independently replicated, no one has published yield or reliability figures for it, the chips are not purchasable through ordinary channels, and a failed attempt destroys the machine and everything on it. We will not offer it, and we would treat any shop that advertises it as a routine service with real caution. What we do offer is repair of what is repairable, which is a longer list than most people expect.

Memory: 48GB becomes 64GB

The M4 Pro tops out at 48GB of unified memory. The M5 Pro raises that ceiling to 64GB. For most people this changes nothing, because most people do not approach 48GB. For a specific group — large video timelines, virtual machines, sizeable local AI models, heavy 3D scenes — it removes the reason to step up to a Max-tier chip purely to get more memory. That is a real saving, and it is the strongest practical argument for the newer generation.

Because the choice is permanent, it deserves more thought than any other line on the order page. The rule we give customers is to specify for the workload they expect in three or four years, not the one they have this month. Memory demand in professional software has only ever moved one direction, and the machine cannot follow it.

There is a second-order reason to err upward, and it is about wear rather than speed. When a machine runs short of memory, macOS moves less-used pages out to the storage. More swapping means more writing, and the storage that absorbs those writes is soldered down. If it degrades, the replacement unit is the logic board. We want to be careful here: there was a wave of alarm in 2021 claiming Apple silicon drives would wear out within months, and that claim was substantially walked back — much of it traced to how the wear counters were being read rather than to failing hardware. The mechanism is real, the panic was not. Buying enough memory is sensible because it keeps the machine fast and reduces unnecessary writes, not because your drive is about to die.

If a machine you already own is struggling, memory is not the only lever. Storage that is nearly full, a battery that has lost capacity and is forcing the system to throttle, or a thermal problem from years of dust will all present as "it got slow". Storage: soldered, and married to the chip

On both generations the flash memory is soldered directly to the logic board. There is no drive, no module and no connector. Apple does not publish a storage part for either machine; capacity is instead an attribute of the logic board itself, which is why the parts catalogue lists dozens of board variants distinguished by their memory and storage combination.

This is the single most common misunderstanding we correct at the counter, and there is a good reason it persists: the M4 Mac mini genuinely does have a removable storage module, and it was widely reported at the time. None of that transfers to a MacBook Pro. Different machine, different design.

The storage is also encrypted to the specific processor it shipped with. Every block is encrypted with keys generated inside the processor's secure enclave, derived from an identifier fused into the silicon during manufacture that never leaves the chip. Move the flash chips to another board and they are unreadable — not difficult, not expensive, simply impossible.

Two practical consequences follow. First, a logic board replacement takes your data with it. If someone quotes you a board swap, ask explicitly what happens to the contents before you authorise anything. Second, a machine that will not power on is not a lost cause: if the fault is in the power delivery rather than the processor itself, repairing that board at component level brings the data back with the machine. The battery: one genuine improvement

This is where the two generations genuinely part company, and it is worth understanding properly because it is the repair most owners will eventually need.

On the M4 Pro, Apple does not sell a battery. It sells a top case with the battery and keyboard already installed as one assembly. An official battery replacement therefore means replacing the chassis component that the keyboard, trackpad surround and battery all live in. Independently, the battery can be changed on its own — it is a multi-cell pack held down with stretch-release adhesive strips rather than welded or riveted, and there are fourteen of those strips on the 14-inch machine. Six are reachable through the trackpad recess and the remaining eight sit along the outer cells, so the trackpad has to come out to do the job properly. It is fiddly, patient work, and the strips get more brittle as a machine ages.

With the M5 generation Apple changed course. In December 2025 it began selling a standalone battery module for the 14-inch M5 and published a revised procedure that reaches the battery by removing only the bottom case and one flex cable — no full teardown, no top case. In the markets where Apple sells parts directly, that battery costs a fraction of the top-case assembly it replaces, and returning the old one earns a credit. When teardown engineers examined the M5, they also found that the pull tabs on the central cells could be reached without extracting the trackpad first, which had never been true of a MacBook Pro before.

One honest caveat, because we would rather say this than guess: the reporting on whether that standalone battery is offered for the M5 Pro and M5 Max specifically — as opposed to the base M5 — is not consistent, and we have not confirmed it ourselves on those models. Treat the direction of travel as real and the exact part availability for the Pro machines as something to check at the time. Either way, the battery is not a part Apple requires to be calibrated on these machines, which is why it remains one of the more approachable repairs. What the split-die package changes

The M5 Pro is the first Apple laptop chip to abandon a single piece of silicon. Package analysis has found four dies inside it: one carrying the processor cores, neural engine and Thunderbolt controllers, one carrying the graphics cores, memory controllers and media engines, and two structurally inert dies that balance the package. The two active dies are bonded face to face using a hybrid bonding technique that replaces conventional solder micro-bumps with direct copper-to-copper connections — its first appearance in consumer computing.

It is genuinely impressive engineering, and it is also worth saying clearly what it does not do for you. Splitting the processor and graphics onto separate dies does not make either one separately replaceable. Everything is sealed under one lid, on one substrate, alongside the memory. Nothing inside that package is a serviceable component, and no source we found suggests board-level rework of the new packaging is feasible. The chiplet design is about performance and manufacturing yield, not repair.

What it does affect, indirectly, is heat. Apple kept the same cooling hardware and leaned on the package to spread heat instead. Reviews still report these machines running warm and the fans becoming audible under sustained load, and the 14-inch is the more thermally constrained of the two sizes. That matters more in Singapore than in most markets: ambient humidity and dust build-up in heat exchangers is the single most common cause of the overheating machines we see, regardless of generation. A MacBook that runs hot is usually a cleaning and repaste job, not a design fault.

Parts pairing and calibration

Four components on this generation of MacBook Pro require Apple's on-device calibration step after replacement: the display, the Touch ID board, the lid angle sensor and the logic board. The calibration runs on the machine itself and needs an internet connection. Notably, the battery is not on that list, nor are the fans, speakers, trackpad, ports or bottom case.

What happens if a part is left uncalibrated is more nuanced than the internet suggests. Apple's stated position is that it does not disable third-party parts unless they affect security and privacy — and biometrics is the case where it does. In practice that means an uncalibrated Touch ID board will not authenticate: you cannot use the fingerprint reader to unlock the machine or authorise purchases until calibration completes. Display swaps between machines are the other known trouble spot; teardown engineers describe moving displays or logic boards between machines as a minefield of software locks, and colour management features have misbehaved after uncalibrated swaps on earlier generations.

There is one genuinely encouraging development here, and it applies to both generations. Recent macOS releases include a repair assistant that handles calibration of genuine Apple parts — including used genuine parts pulled from another machine — and it is available to independent workshops, not only to Apple. Apple's own tables now list used-part support for most components on these models. The important exception is that a used part can be locked to its previous owner's account, in which case it cannot be calibrated at all without that person's credentials. One small difference in the M4 Pro's favour over the base M4 of the same year: used-part support for the Touch ID board and lid angle sensor is listed for the Pro and Max models but not for the base 14-inch M4. It is a narrow distinction, but it is the kind of thing that decides whether a repair is economic.

What an independent workshop can fix

Set against all of the above, it would be easy to conclude these machines are unfixable. They are not. The list of components Apple supplies as discrete parts is long: the bottom case, both fans, the vent and antenna module, the MagSafe board, each of the USB-C port boards, the audio board, the speakers, the trackpad, the display, the Touch ID board and the top case. Several of those sit underneath the logic board, so reaching them means removing the board first — tedious rather than impossible.

Then there is the work that never appears in a parts catalogue, which is where component-level repair earns its keep. The USB-C port controllers used on Apple silicon boards are a documented recurring failure, particularly after liquid ingress, and they are replaceable individually. Power management chips, charging circuits and shorted capacitors on the processor's supply rails are all repairable with the right equipment. Backlight circuits fail in a characteristic way — a fuse or a damaged component feeding the backlight converter — and produce a machine that looks dead but shows a faint image under a torch. Liquid damage typically spreads across exactly these three areas: the charging circuit, the backlight circuit and the main power rail.

These are the repairs that turn a machine Apple has written off into a working laptop, and they are the reason the distinction between board repair and board replacement matters so much on hardware where the storage is soldered to the board. A few components are genuinely awkward: the card reader and some port hardware are integrated into the board and need advanced soldering to address, and there is no separate keyboard part — only individual keycaps or the entire top case. The Singapore catch

If you have read about ordering genuine Apple parts and renting Apple's tool kits to do a repair at home, here is the part that rarely makes it into those articles: Apple's Self Service Repair programme is not available in Singapore. It covers the United States, Canada and a list of European countries. It has never been offered anywhere in the Asia-Pacific region.

That is not a small footnote for a local owner. It means the do-it-yourself route that the manuals and parts store imply simply is not open to you, no matter how capable you are or which model you own. Repair here goes through Apple Singapore's own service channel or through an independent workshop, and the choice between them usually comes down to whether the fault calls for a module swap or component-level work.

It also changes how you should read international repair coverage generally. Part prices quoted in those articles are US prices for a programme you cannot use, and the procedures assume tools you cannot rent locally. The underlying engineering facts still apply — soldered memory is soldered memory anywhere — but the consumer options described do not.

Specifying either machine to last

Because nothing can be changed later, the specification is the whole decision. A few things we would tell a friend.

Buy memory for the machine's fourth year. It is the only component you can never revisit, and the cost of getting it wrong is a new machine rather than an upgrade. If you are hesitating between two tiers, take the larger one.

Storage is now less of a trap than it was. Base storage on the M5 Pro starts at 1TB, which removes a lot of the pressure that made small configurations painful on earlier machines. On the M4 Pro, be more careful: a nearly full drive on a machine with soldered storage is a slow, irritating problem with no cheap fix. External Thunderbolt storage relieves capacity pressure perfectly well, though it does nothing for a shortage of memory.

The M4 Pro is not a worse buy for being older. Both generations are equally unupgradeable and share an enclosure, so a discounted M4 Pro is not accepting a design compromise — only a slower chip and a 48GB ceiling. If the discount is real and 48GB is enough, it remains an excellent machine.

The M5 Pro's advantages are specific. A 64GB ceiling, more bandwidth, larger base storage, and a battery service story that is moving in the right direction. If none of those describe your situation, they are not worth a premium.

Look after the parts you can still change. The battery is a consumable and it is replaceable on both generations. Keep the vents clear and have the cooling cleaned periodically, particularly in this climate. Keep liquids away from it, because liquid damage on these boards is the one failure that can take the storage with it. Frequently asked questions

Can I upgrade the RAM in an M5 Pro or M4 Pro MacBook Pro?

No, and not by any workshop, Apple included. On Apple silicon the memory sits as separate DRAM packages mounted on the processor's own package substrate, beside the processor die, on a bus hundreds of lines wide. There is no socket and no module to change. The only way to alter the memory in a finished machine is to fit a different logic board, which costs close to a new machine and wipes the storage with it. Choose the memory you need on the day you buy.

Is the SSD replaceable on either generation?

No. On both the M4 Pro and the M5 Pro the NAND is soldered to the logic board and bound to the storage controller inside the processor, so there is no drive to unplug. People often think otherwise because the M4 Mac mini genuinely does have a removable storage module. That module does not exist in any MacBook Pro.

Did the M5 Pro actually get easier to repair than the M4 Pro?

In one meaningful way, yes. With the M5 generation Apple began selling a battery as a standalone part with a much shorter procedure, where the M4 Pro battery is only sold inside a complete top case with keyboard. Beyond the battery the two machines are close to identical to work on: the same enclosure, the same screws, the same adhesive, the same soldered memory and storage.

Does the M5 Pro have a new chassis or a different internal layout?

No. The enclosure, dimensions and cooling hardware carry over from the M4 generation. What changed is the silicon: the M5 Pro is built as a split-die package with separate processor and graphics dies, where the M4 Pro is a single die. If the logic board dies, can my files be recovered from the storage chips?

Not by moving the chips anywhere else. The encryption keys are tied to a unique identifier fused into the processor during manufacture, and that identifier never leaves the chip. Storage lifted onto another board is unreadable. Recovery on these machines means repairing the original board at component level so it runs again, which is why a board replacement quote and a board repair quote are very different conversations.

Should I buy the M4 Pro now that the M5 Pro exists?

For most people a discounted M4 Pro is still an excellent machine, and both generations are equally unupgradeable, so the decision is about specification rather than longevity of design. Two things push towards the M5 Pro: the 64GB memory ceiling, and the standalone battery direction Apple has started down. Two things push towards the M4 Pro: price, and a longer public record of how the hardware ages.
