MacBook Pro repair guide: flexgate, butterfly keys, and the board-versus-data decision
MacBook Pros fail in patterns tied tightly to model year. Knowing which pattern you own tells you what the fault probably is, what it should cost, and whether your data is at stake.

What fails, by era
2016–2019 (Touch Bar, butterfly keyboard). The most repair-prone MacBook Pros ever made. Butterfly keys jam or double-type from a single dust particle. Display backlight cables ("flexgate") wear through where they wrap the hinge. Batteries swell. Touch Bars fail. Logic boards suffer the usual charging-IC and rail faults.
2019–2020 (16", Magic Keyboard, Intel). A return to a scissor keyboard and a much better machine. Thermals are the story: repastes matter. Batteries swell at ordinary rates.
2021–present (M1 Pro/Max through M4). Excellent reliability. Screens crack, batteries age, liquid gets spilled. The critical difference is the storage: soldered and encrypted to the Secure Enclave.
Flexgate: the S$50 cable behind a S$700 quote
On 2016–2017 Pros especially, the display's backlight flex cable is routed tightly around the hinge and is a few millimetres too short. Opening and closing the lid abrades it. The symptom arrives in stages: a "stage light" effect — uneven pools of brightness along the bottom of the screen — then a backlight that only works below a certain lid angle, then no backlight at all, with a faint image visible under a torch.
Because the cable is part of the display assembly, Apple's answer is a display assembly. The component-level answer is to repair or extend the flex, or replace the backlight driver if it took the cable's failure with it. The price difference is enormous. Shine a torch on your dark screen: a ghost image means backlight, not panel. Read how we diagnose the display chain.
Butterfly keyboards and top cases
The butterfly mechanism sits under a one-millimetre travel cap and is intolerant of debris. Apple's service programme for affected models has now largely expired, so these arrive here.
Where one or two keys misbehave, we lift the cap, clean the mechanism and replace the butterfly clip. That is worth attempting first and costs a fraction of anything else. Where the keyboard is failing broadly, the correct repair is a top-case assembly — the keyboard is riveted in — which also brings a new battery and trackpad. Expect S$300–480. See butterfly keyboard repair.

Logic boards: repair, do not replace
Most "dead logic board" MacBook Pros are one component away from working: a charging IC, a shorted capacitor on a rail, a failed SMC power sequence, corrosion from an old spill. On a bench power supply the current draw declares which within seconds, and a microsolder repair costs a fraction of a board.
On T2 and Apple silicon machines this stops being a price question and becomes a data question. The storage is soldered to the board and encrypted to its Secure Enclave. Replace the board and the data is gone. Repair the board and the data comes back with it. That is why our first question on any Mac is not "what is the fault" but "what is on the drive". See encrypted and soldered storage.

Owning a MacBook Pro well
Turn on Optimised Battery Charging. Do not close the lid on anything, ever — a crumb is enough to crack a Retina panel. Check your cycle count once a year (Option-click the Apple menu → System Information → Power). Back up to iCloud and a local Time Machine drive, because on soldered, encrypted storage a backup is not a precaution, it is the only recovery plan that always works. And if the trackpad stops clicking, that is a swollen battery: stop using it today.
Questions we get every week
Frequently asked questions
Is it worth repairing a 2017 MacBook Pro?
Often, if the fault is a flex cable, a battery, a keyboard, or a single board component — those are S$200–480 repairs on a machine still perfectly capable for everyday work. It stops being worth it when a display assembly and a top case and a board are all needed at once.
What is flexgate and can it be repaired?
A backlight flex cable that abrades where it wraps the hinge on 2016–2017 MacBook Pros. Symptoms: uneven "stage light" pools at the bottom of the screen, then a backlight that dies past a certain lid angle. It is repairable at cable level for far less than a display assembly.
If Apple says my logic board is dead, is my data lost?
Only if the board is replaced. On T2 and Apple silicon Macs the storage is soldered to the board and encrypted to its Secure Enclave, so a replacement takes the data with it. A board repair preserves it. Ask for the repair, and ask before you authorise anything.
How much does MacBook Pro repair cost in Singapore?
S$190–480 covers most battery, keyboard, top-case and flex cable work. Logic board microsoldering runs S$250–700 depending on the fault, quoted after diagnosis. Free first-line diagnostics on arrival.
