MacBook stuck on the loading screen (2026): how to fix a frozen progress bar or question-mark folder
You press the power button, the Apple logo appears, the progress bar creeps to about a third — and then nothing. Or worse, a folder with a flashing question mark. It is a horrible moment, but it is rarely the end of your Mac or your data. Here is how to work through it calmly, in the right order.

First, read the symptom — it tells you a lot
Not every "stuck loading screen" is the same problem — the exact picture on your display narrows the cause. Look carefully at what you are seeing:
- Apple logo with a progress bar that stalls part-way. macOS started to load but hit a file it cannot get past — often a corrupted system file, a half-installed update, or a filesystem error.
- A flashing folder with a question mark. The Mac cannot find a startup disk with a usable copy of macOS — the volume may be un-selected, or the drive or install may be damaged.
- A prohibited sign, or a spinning globe. A disk was found running an incompatible macOS, or the Mac has given up on the internal disk and is trying to start up over the internet.
The rule of thumb: a bar that freezes at the same spot every time, or a question-mark folder that keeps returning after you re-select the disk, points towards hardware or a damaged install rather than a one-off glitch.
The safe first moves that fix most cases
A surprising number of stuck MacBooks are cured by steps that carry no risk to your data, so always start here.
Give it more time, then force a clean restart. A Mac installing an update can genuinely sit on the bar for twenty minutes or more. If it has been longer, hold the power button for about ten seconds until the screen goes black, wait, and power on again. A clean restart clears a lot of temporary hangs.
Disconnect everything. Unplug external drives, hubs, docks, monitors and anything in the USB-C ports, leaving only the charger. A faulty external disk or a dock trying to act as a boot device is a common, easily-missed reason a Mac stalls at start-up.
Check the charger. A failing or swollen battery can lose power mid-boot and appear to freeze. Try a known-good Apple charger and a different outlet. If it only misbehaves off mains power, the battery is a prime suspect — more in the hardware section.
One habit before you go further: if anything on this Mac is not backed up, read the data-protection step first. The deeper fixes touch the drive, and the safest order is always to copy the data off, then repair.
Safe mode: let macOS repair itself
Safe mode starts macOS with the bare minimum and, importantly, runs an automatic check of your startup disk and clears certain caches on the way in. It very often gets a stuck Mac to the desktop, and sometimes that fixes it. Entering it depends on the chip:
- Apple silicon (M1, M2, M3, M4 and later): shut down fully. Press and hold the power button until "Loading startup options" appears. Select your disk, then hold Shift and click "Continue in Safe Mode".
- Intel MacBooks: shut down, then power on and immediately hold Shift until the login window appears.
If it reaches the desktop in safe mode, restart normally and see whether the fault is gone. If it now boots fine, the culprit was likely a login item, a kernel extension or a cache that safe mode cleared. If it still hangs — or safe mode freezes on the bar — Recovery is the next stop.
Recovery mode and Disk Utility First Aid
Recovery is a small, separate system that lives outside your main macOS install — which is why it is so useful when the main system will not load. From here you can repair the disk, reinstall macOS, or copy files off:
- Apple silicon: hold the power button until "Loading startup options" appears, then click Options → Continue.
- Intel: power on and immediately hold Command (⌘) + R until the Apple logo or a spinning globe appears.
Once in the macOS Utilities window, open Disk Utility, select your main volume (usually "Macintosh HD"), and run First Aid. It checks the filesystem for the directory corruption that stalls a boot and repairs what it safely can. If it reports errors it could not fix, run it again; repeated failure on the same volume is a strong sign the drive or install is damaged.
If First Aid comes back clean but the Mac still will not boot, the system files may be corrupt — which is where a reinstall comes in. If instead Disk Utility cannot see the internal disk, or it appears greyed out, that usually means a hardware fault and it is time to talk to a MacBook repair workshop rather than keep retrying.

Reinstalling macOS without losing your files
This is the step people fear most, and the fear is mostly misplaced. From the same Recovery menu, choosing Reinstall macOS reinstalls the operating system over your existing setup and leaves your files, apps and settings in place — it replaces the potentially corrupted system files without touching your personal data. Erasing the drive is a separate choice you make deliberately in Disk Utility.
Two honest caveats. First, a reinstall pulls the installer from Apple over the internet, so you need stable Wi-Fi and the charger plugged in. Second — and this matters — never reinstall onto a drive that First Aid could not repair, or that is throwing read errors, until your data is safely backed up. Writing a fresh system onto a failing disk can be the final push that makes the data unrecoverable. If the disk is healthy, reinstall away; if not, copy the data off first. And if a clean reinstall still freezes at the same bar, you have ruled out software — the next move is hardware.
When it is hardware, not software
If safe mode, First Aid and a reinstall have not fixed it, the cause is almost certainly physical — and none of these is fixable by button combinations:
- Failing storage. A worn SSD produces exactly this symptom. On MacBooks from 2016 onward the SSD is soldered to the logic board, so recovering the data is board-level work; on some 2013–2015 models it is a removable card, a quicker fix.
- A swollen or dead battery. A cell that cannot hold a steady voltage causes brown-outs during the power-hungry boot, freezing the Mac part-way. A MacBook battery replacement resolves it.
- Liquid damage. Even a small spill weeks ago can corrode the board and disturb the storage or power lines. Corrosion spreads under power, so speed matters — our MacBook water damage service cleans it first.
- Logic board faults. A failed power-management IC, a cracked solder joint or a storage controller problem can all leave a Mac hanging at boot — the province of MacBook logic board repair, microsoldering rather than a parts swap.

Protecting your data before anything drastic
Here is the single most important thing in this guide: get your data off before you erase or reinstall, if it is not already backed up. Stress makes people click "Erase" to get a working machine back — only to realise their photos went with it.
If the Mac still reaches Recovery, you often do not need us. Apple silicon Macs can share the internal disk to another Mac, and on any model you can frequently mount the drive in Disk Utility and drag files to an external SSD. If the disk is failing, do not keep hammering it. Will reinstalling macOS erase my files?

That said, never reinstall over a drive that is throwing errors until you have a backup, because a reinstall onto a failing disk can finish the job. If the data matters and there is no backup, stop and let it be copied off first.
What does the folder with a question mark mean on a MacBook?
A flashing folder with a question mark means the Mac cannot find a startup disk with a working copy of macOS. Sometimes the system volume was simply un-selected and choosing it again in Startup Disk fixes it. Just as often the drive has developed a fault, the macOS install is damaged, or on older MacBooks the SSD cable or connector has failed. It is a strong hint to check the disk in Recovery before assuming the worst.
Can you recover data from a MacBook that won't finish booting?
Usually yes. If the Mac reaches Recovery, the files can often be copied to an external drive from there.
