Why your laptop is running slow (and how to fix it) in 2026

A laptop that takes three minutes to boot and stutters on a single browser tab is not necessarily old or dying — it is usually one or two fixable bottlenecks. This guide walks through every real cause, so you know what to fix at home and what is worth a technician’s bench.

First, find the bottleneck — do not guess

Almost every slow laptop is slow for one specific reason, and throwing money at the wrong part is the most common mistake we see. The most useful diagnostic tool is already on your machine. On Windows, open Task Manager and watch the Performance tab while the laptop feels slow; on a Mac, open Activity Monitor. Look for whichever number sits pinned near 100 per cent:

  • Disk at 100% — a failing or overloaded drive, the classic cause on older machines. See storage and the SSD upgrade.
  • Memory near maximum — you have run out of RAM and the system is swapping to the slow drive.
  • CPU pinned, fans screaming, case hot — likely thermal throttling or a runaway process.
  • All fine until you list startup items — too much background bloat loading at boot.

Sort the processes by CPU, memory and disk in turn and note the top offenders — that tells you which section below applies. If the numbers make no sense, or the machine freezes before you can read them, bring it in for a free hardware check.

A slow laptop usually has too much running, or an ageing drive.

Startup apps and background bloat

Over a couple of years, a laptop quietly accumulates programs that all insist on launching at startup — cloud sync tools, chat apps, updaters, printer utilities, game launchers. Each is modest alone; twenty together turn a thirty-second boot into a three-minute crawl.

On Windows, open Task Manager → Startup apps and disable everything you do not need the moment the machine turns on. On a Mac, trim the list under System Settings → General → Login Items. Disabling a startup item does not uninstall it — it simply stops it loading until you open it.

While you are there, uninstall software you no longer use, and be wary of “PC cleaner” and “speed booster” tools — most are the very bloat they claim to remove, and some are malware. If performance dropped off a cliff overnight, run a scan with the built-in Windows Security, as a real infection can slow a machine badly. If a tidy-up helps for a week and then it crawls again, the cause is deeper and physical.

A full or failing drive

Two very different storage problems both show up as “my laptop is slow,” and it is worth separating them.

A drive that is full. Both Windows and macOS need free space to breathe — for temporary files, virtual memory and updates — and once a drive climbs past roughly 90 per cent full, everything drags. Clear downloads, empty the recycle bin, move photos to the cloud, and uninstall large games; getting back to 15–20 per cent free often restores a surprising amount of pep.

A drive that is failing. This is more serious and common on machines five years and older. A mechanical hard drive is a spinning platter with a moving head, and as it wears it re-reads bad sectors, stalling the system. The signs are freezing for seconds at a time, a faint clicking or grinding noise, and Task Manager showing Disk at 100% while doing almost nothing. If you see these, back up now. Our data recovery service exists precisely because people ignore that clicking until the drive dies. A failing drive is also one of the faults we diagnose most often during a general laptop repair, and catching it early means a simple swap rather than a rescue job.

Hearing clicking, or freezing for seconds at a time? A failing drive gets worse with every hour of use — back up straight away, then get it checked.

Not enough RAM

RAM is your laptop’s short-term working memory — the desk it spreads its current tasks across. Run out of desk space and the system shuffles data to the much slower drive, and everything grinds. This is why a laptop can feel fine with a few apps open, then stutter the moment you have twenty tabs, a video call and a spreadsheet going at once.

Check the Memory figure in Task Manager or Activity Monitor while the machine is busy. If it sits near maximum with lots of swap activity, more RAM will genuinely help. In 2026, 8 GB is the bare minimum and 16 GB the sensible target for anyone juggling many tabs. If you already have 16 GB and plenty of headroom, adding more will do nothing, and we will tell you so. Whether RAM can be upgraded at all depends on the machine: many older Windows laptops have accessible slots, while most modern ultrabooks and every Apple silicon MacBook have the memory soldered on.

Heat and thermal throttling

Singapore’s heat and humidity make overheating one of the most under-diagnosed causes of slowness here. When the processor gets too hot, it deliberately slows itself to avoid damage — a safety feature called thermal throttling. The clue is a machine that is fast for a few minutes then crawls, fans roaring and the underside too hot to touch.

The two usual culprits:

  • Dust-clogged vents and fans. Air intakes fill with dust and lint, so the cooling system can no longer shift heat; a proper internal clean-out restores airflow.
  • Dried-out thermal paste. The paste that carries heat from the processor to the heatsink dries and cracks after three to five years. A re-paste is routine bench work and often the biggest temperature drop we can deliver.

Using it on a hard, flat surface helps a little, but if it is throttling badly the fix is internal. Persistent overheating that survives a clean and re-paste can point to a failing fan or a deeper board fault, where a motherboard-level diagnosis earns its keep. Heat is also the enemy of a battery, so if runtime has collapsed alongside it, read our guide to the signs you need a new laptop battery.

Not sure which fix your laptop needs? Let us find the bottleneck first.

Tell us the model and one line on what it does — slow to boot, freezing, running hot, or noisy. You will get an honest read on whether it is a clean-up, an upgrade, or a repair, before you spend a cent.

Illustration of upgrading a laptop from a hard drive to an SSD on a bench
An SSD upgrade is the biggest single speed jump for an old laptop.

The single biggest upgrade: HDD to SSD

If your laptop still runs a mechanical hard drive — a spinning HDD rather than a solid-state SSD — this is the most transformative upgrade you can make, full stop — it beats more RAM, it beats a faster processor, and it costs less than either. An SSD has no moving parts and is many times faster at the small, random reads that Windows and macOS do constantly, so the effect is felt everywhere: boot in seconds instead of minutes, apps that open the instant you click, and no more freezing every time the machine touches the disk. We regularly fit one to a laptop its owner had written off and hand back something that feels new.

Losing your files is a non-issue done properly. We clone your existing drive to the new SSD, so the operating system, your programs, settings and every file come across exactly as they were, with no reinstall. A drive-and-transfer job like this is among our most-requested laptop repair and upgrade work, usually the low hundreds fitted, cloned and tested. For a fuller breakdown, see our guide to laptop repair costs in Singapore.

When it is a hardware fault, not software

Sometimes “slow” is really an early hardware fault in disguise that no amount of tidying up will touch. Random freezes that survive a clean reinstall usually mean failing memory or a failing drive; a machine that works, then slows, then shuts off points to overheating or power delivery; and slowness after a knock or a spill can be a board quietly corroding. If liquid is involved, read what to do after a laptop spill straight away — time matters.

These cases need component-level work — repairing a power line or cleaning corrosion under a microscope rather than swapping whole boards blindly. This is the core of what we do — genuine component-level board repair on every brand. And if your slow machine is a desktop or all-in-one, the same approach applies through our computer repair service.

Indicative costs in Singapore

We never quote a firm price before seeing the machine, but as a rough guide to the bands you might see:

  • Software clean-up and health check — inexpensive; we tidy startup items and confirm what is holding it back.
  • Thermal clean and fresh paste — modest, and often the biggest single improvement on a machine that overheats.
  • RAM upgrade (where the model allows it) — typically the low hundreds including the memory.
  • HDD-to-SSD upgrade with full clone — usually the low hundreds, part and transfer included.
  • Board-level repair for a genuine hardware fault — quoted case by case after diagnosis.

Two promises hold across all of them: you get a written quote before any work, and if we cannot improve the machine, you do not pay a repair fee. Walk-in diagnosis is free, every completed job carries a written warranty, and we favour a targeted laptop repair over telling you to buy a new machine. For prices across every device, our repair cost overview lays out the full picture.

Questions we get every week

Frequently asked questions

How can I tell if my slow laptop is a software problem or a hardware fault?

Watch the pattern. Software slowness is usually predictable — slow on startup, slow with many tabs open, better after a restart. A hardware fault feels different: random freezes, loud fans, the machine getting very hot, clicking noises from an old drive, or performance that collapses and never recovers even after a clean install. If a restart and a tidy-up help for a while, it is likely software. If nothing helps and the symptoms are physical, bring it in for a free diagnosis so we can test the drive, memory and cooling rather than guessing.

Will adding more RAM make my laptop faster?

Only if you are actually running out of it. If your laptop hits high memory use and starts swapping to the drive, more RAM removes that bottleneck and the difference is dramatic. If you have plenty of headroom already, adding more will not speed anything up — the limit is elsewhere, usually the drive or the processor. We check your real usage first and tell you honestly whether RAM is the right spend before quoting anything.

Is upgrading from a hard drive to an SSD worth it in 2026?

For almost any laptop still running a spinning hard drive, it is the single best upgrade you can make — more than RAM, more than anything. A solid-state drive is many times faster at the small, random reads that Windows and macOS do constantly, so boot times, app launches and general responsiveness all transform. A five or six year old machine that felt ready for the bin often feels new again. We clone your existing drive so nothing is lost, and it is usually the low hundreds fitted and transferred.

Why does my laptop slow down when it gets hot?

It is protecting itself. When the processor gets too hot it deliberately reduces its own speed — called thermal throttling — to avoid damage. In Singapore’s climate this is common, and it is usually caused by dust-clogged vents or dried-out thermal paste after a few years of use. A clean-out and fresh paste restore normal speed. If it keeps overheating after that, a worn fan or a deeper fault may be involved and is worth having checked.

How much does it cost to speed up a slow laptop in Singapore?

It depends on the cause. A software clean-up and health check is inexpensive; a thermal clean and re-paste is modest; an SSD upgrade or a RAM increase is typically the low hundreds including the part and data transfer. We never quote a firm figure before seeing the machine, because “slow” can mean five different things. Walk-in diagnosis is free, you get a written quote before any work, and if we cannot improve it you do not pay a repair fee.
