What Apple actually launched — and the one that did not appear

For the first time since 2007, Apple opened a September iPhone launch without a standard model. Three premium phones took the stage and the entry-level handset was simply absent. If you were waiting for a regular iPhone 18 at a regular iPhone price, you are still waiting.

Apple Singapore’s current line-up is now the iPhone Duo, the iPhone 18 Pro, the iPhone Air, the iPhone 17, the iPhone 17e and the iPhone 16. There is no non-Pro iPhone 18 on that page. Several outlets report a standard model arriving in the first half of 2027, roughly six months behind the Pro. Apple has said nothing about it, so treat that as reporting rather than fact.

That absence matters more in Singapore than it might elsewhere. The standard model has always been the one that anchors the bottom of the range, and without it the cheapest way into the current generation is S$1,899. Anyone who budgeted around the usual entry price is now choosing between a much more expensive phone, last year’s iPhone 17, or keeping what they have.

iPhone 18 Pro price in Singapore — every storage tier

These are Apple Singapore’s own prices, in Singapore dollars, taken from the Apple Store on 10 September 2026. They are not a currency conversion. Telcos and authorised resellers set their own prices and bundles, and those can differ.

Both models start at 256GB — there is no 128GB tier — and both come in Black, Silver, Glacier and Burgundy. Apple has set a purchase limit of two iPhone 18 Pro and two iPhone 18 Pro Max per customer, which usually signals expected shortages in the first weeks.

iPhone Duo: Apple’s first folding phone

The iPhone Duo opens from a 5.4-inch outer screen into a 7.6-inch inner one — about half again the screen area of the Pro Max. It runs the same A20 Pro chip, carries two 48MP rear cameras, and is built around a Grade 5 titanium frame and hinge cover with Ceramic Shield front and back and an IP68 rating.

It comes in Star White and Night Sky. Pre-orders open at 8pm Singapore time on 16 October, with sales from 23 October — five weeks behind the Pro models. At S$3,099 to start, it is the most expensive iPhone Apple has ever sold here, and roughly the price of two iPhone 17s.

What is genuinely new

Stripping out the marketing, three changes are real and worth understanding.

A camera that changes its own aperture

The 48MP main camera now has a variable aperture that moves between f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/4 depending on the light and the depth of field wanted. Apple claims about 50% better low-light performance at the widest setting. There are also new Pro controls for aperture, shutter speed, white balance and a histogram — things that previously needed a third-party app.

This is the first genuinely new piece of camera hardware in several generations. A moving aperture is also a moving part, which is worth remembering: mechanical parts in phones wear, and this one sits behind the lens.

A 2nm chip, and what it buys

The A20 Pro is Apple’s first 2nm processor, down from the 3nm-class A19 Pro. It has a six-core CPU, a seven-core GPU, a dual 16-core Neural Engine and 50% more memory bandwidth. Reported figures put it around 15% faster with close to 30% better power efficiency.

Battery life that finally moves

Apple quotes up to 36 hours of video playback on the Pro and up to 45 hours on the Pro Max for eSIM-only models — a large step, and the most useful change here for most people. Charging to 50% takes around 15 minutes, down from about 20.

What a folding screen means when it breaks

This is the part reviews rarely cover, and it is our job to be straight about it.

A folding phone has a hinge, a flexible inner display and a second outer display. Apple has engineered this carefully — titanium hinge cover, optically clear adhesives that let the display layers slide as it folds, a scratch-resistant coating on the inner screen. None of that changes the underlying arithmetic: more moving parts and more glass mean more that can go wrong, and a flexible display is a harder, costlier thing to replace than a flat one.

Three practical points if you are considering one:

• The inner screen is softer than you expect. A flexible display cannot use the same hard cover glass as a normal phone. Grit in a pocket, a fingernail, or closing the phone on a crumb is a more realistic threat than a drop.
• The hinge is the wear item. Hinges are rated for tens of thousands of cycles, and most survive fine, but they are the part with a service life rather than a failure rate.
• Independent repair takes longer to arrive. Parts, tools and documentation for any brand-new model reach workshops slowly, and folding designs slower still. For the first months, Apple is realistically the only route for a Duo screen.

If you want a phone you can have fixed cheaply and quickly for the next four years, a folding phone is not that phone. If you want the newest thing Apple makes, it is. Both are reasonable — just choose with your eyes open.

Upgrade, or repair the one you have?

Most people who ask us about a new iPhone are not really asking about the new iPhone. They are asking whether the one in their pocket is worth keeping.

The honest arithmetic is usually simple. A single failed part on an otherwise healthy phone — a cracked screen, a battery that no longer lasts the day, a charging port full of lint — costs a small fraction of S$1,899. If the phone still runs the apps you need and still takes current iOS, repairing it and waiting is very often the better financial decision, especially this year when the entry-level model has not arrived.

Upgrading makes more sense when:

• Several things have failed at once, and the repairs start to add up against the price of a phone
• The logic board itself is damaged, usually from liquid — board-level work is possible and we do it, but it is the point where cost and certainty both get worse
• The phone can no longer run a current version of iOS, which eventually affects security updates and banking apps
• You genuinely want the new camera or the battery life, and the money is not the deciding factor

We will tell you which side of that line you are on before you spend anything. Diagnosis is free on walk-ins, you get a written price before any work starts, and if we cannot fix it you do not pay a repair fee. If the answer is “replace it”, we will say so — there is no sense repairing a phone that is not worth repairing.

What this means if you are on an older iPhone

Most people reading this are not choosing between two new phones. They are wondering whether now is the moment to move. Roughly, by age:

• iPhone 15 and 16. There is no practical reason to move. Both run current iOS, both are supported for years yet, and neither is missing anything you will notice day to day. If one has a cracked screen or a tired battery, fix it — see our iPhone 15 repair page.
• iPhone 13 and 14. These are the phones where a battery replacement transforms the experience. A three or four-year-old battery is usually the entire complaint. It is a same-day job in most cases, and it costs a small fraction of a new phone. We see a lot of iPhone 13 batteries in particular, including swollen ones — if the screen is lifting away from the frame, bring it in rather than pressing it back down.
• iPhone 12 and older. This is where the maths gets genuinely finer. The phone still works, but you are closer to the end of iOS support, and the cost of two repairs starts to look like a deposit on something newer. We will tell you honestly which side of the line yours is on.

The one thing that changes the answer for everyone is liquid. A phone that has been wet has a clock running on it whether or not it looks fine today, and corrosion does not reverse. Where to buy in Singapore

Apple sells directly through the Apple Store online and its physical stores at Orchard Road, Marina Bay Sands and Jewel Changi Airport. Authorised resellers and the three telcos also carry the phones, usually from the same 18 September date, with their own contract pricing. Pre-order stock in the first week typically goes quickly on the higher storage tiers and the newer colours.

One practical warning: the weeks after a launch are when grey-import and “overseas set” listings appear at tempting prices. A set bought outside Singapore may carry a warranty that is awkward to claim here, and parts sourced through unofficial channels can be inconsistent. If you are buying at a discount, know what you are giving up.
