MacBook Air repair guide: thin, sealed, and mostly excellent
The Air is the most common Mac in Singapore and among the most reliable. What breaks is predictable, and one thing about it deserves your attention long before anything breaks.

Three Airs, three stories
Pre-2018 (non-Retina). Serviceable, upgradeable on some models, and now old. Batteries and screens are the usual jobs. Blade SSDs on several generations can be upgraded, which is a rare thing to be able to say about a Mac.
2018–2020 (Retina, Intel, butterfly then Magic). Butterfly keyboards on the 2018–2019 models, with all the debris sensitivity that implies. T2 chip: soldered, encrypted storage. Thermals are modest and these machines throttle readily.
2020–present (M1, M2, M3, M4). Excellent machines. Cool, quiet, long-lived. The faults are physical: cracked screens, swollen batteries, spills, damaged ports. The board is rarely the problem — but when it is, the data is on it.
Batteries: the most common Air repair
An Air's pack is adhered to the top case. Around year four or five it loses capacity, and in some units it swells — and in a chassis that thin, swelling shows up as a trackpad that no longer clicks, a base that rocks on a table, or a lid that no longer sits flush.
Treat that as urgent. Power it down, stop charging, keep it on a hard non-flammable surface, and bring it in the same day. We release adhered packs with controlled heat and approved solvent rather than levering them, and old cells go through licensed disposal. Expect S$190–340. Check your own cycle count today: hold Option, click the Apple menu, choose System Information → Power.

Screens, hinges and things left on the keyboard
The single most common way a MacBook Air screen breaks is closing the lid on something — a pen, an earphone, a USB stick. The gap between keyboard and panel is close to zero. The second most common is lifting the machine one-handed by a corner of the open lid.
Retina display assemblies are bonded, so a cracked panel means an assembly rather than a bare panel, and the price reflects that. Before you accept any quote, though, run the torch test: if the screen is dark but a faint image is visible under a torch at an angle, the panel is alive and the backlight has failed — a completely different, cheaper, board-level repair.

Spills on an Air
An Air has very little room between the keyboard membrane and the logic board. Liquid reaches the board quickly, and corrosion begins under power. The correct response is the same as for any laptop: power off by holding the button, unplug, tent it keyboard-down, do not use rice, and bring it in today. The M-series reality: nothing is upgradeable, and the data is on the board
On every M1 through M4 Air, memory is inside the SoC package and storage is soldered to the logic board, encrypted with a key held in the Secure Enclave. Neither can be upgraded, ever, at any price. Buy the configuration you will still want in four years.
More importantly: if the logic board is replaced, your data is gone with it. If the board is repaired — a charging IC, a shorted rail capacitor, corrosion cleaned and traces jumpered — the data survives. This is why we treat every Mac fault as a data question first. Can you upgrade the RAM or SSD in a MacBook Air?
Not on any M-series Air, and not on any Intel Air with a T2 chip. Memory is inside the SoC package and storage is soldered and encrypted to the board. Some pre-2018 Airs have upgradeable blade SSDs. Buy the configuration you need at purchase.
My MacBook Air trackpad won't click. What's wrong?
Almost always a swollen battery pressing against it from beneath. This is a safety issue, not a convenience one. Power down, stop charging, keep the machine on a hard non-flammable surface, and bring it in the same day.
Is MacBook Air screen repair worth it?
On an M-series Air, usually — the rest of the machine will run for years. First, do the torch test: if a faint image is visible on a dark screen, the panel is fine and only the backlight circuit has failed, which is a far cheaper board-level repair.
Will I lose my data if the logic board fails?
Only if the board is replaced rather than repaired. The storage is soldered to it and encrypted to the Secure Enclave. We repair boards specifically to preserve data, and we raise the question before doing anything irreversible. Keep a backup regardless.
