The back-glass split: which iPhone 14 do you actually have?

This is the one genuinely unusual thing about repairing an iPhone 14, and it catches people out constantly.

For years, cracking the back of an iPhone was close to a worst-case outcome, because the rear glass was bonded to the chassis and replacing it meant replacing most of the phone. With the iPhone 14, Apple reworked the internals so the back panel could be removed independently — and its published Singapore price for back glass damage fell to S$225.

But only on the standard iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus. The 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max did not get the redesign. On those, the rear glass is still bonded to the frame, and Apple’s published Singapore prices for the same damage are S$749 and S$825.

A six-hundred-dollar spread inside one generation, for identical-looking damage. It is also worth noting that Apple’s figure for a 14 Pro Max back is higher than for a 13 Pro Max, so upgrading from a 13 Pro to a 14 Pro did not improve this at all. The redesign only reached the Pro line with the iPhone 15, where back glass is S$225 across all four models.

The practical advice is simple: work out which iPhone 14 you have before you accept any quote, because the cheap figure that circulates online applies to half the range. No sound, or sound that has quietly gone

Audio complaints are the single most common thing iPhone 14 owners search for, and the reassuring news is that a genuinely failed speaker is well down the list of causes.

The usual culprit is a clogged mesh. Both the earpiece grille and the bottom speaker grille are a fine mesh, and a couple of years of pocket lint combined with Singapore humidity packs them solid. The speaker is still working perfectly; the sound simply cannot get out. Cleaning them properly — with the right tools, never with a pin or a needle, which pushes the debris deeper and can pierce the membrane — restores full volume in a large share of cases.

Work through the free checks first. Turn the volume up and check the Ring/Silent switch. Make sure a Bluetooth speaker, car kit or pair of earbuds has not quietly claimed the audio — this catches people out more than anything else. Take the case off in case it is covering the bottom grille. Then record a voice memo and play it back: if it plays fine through the earpiece but not the speaker, the bottom driver is the problem; if the opposite, it is the earpiece. If calls are muffled to the person on the other end rather than to you, it is a microphone, which is a different part again.

Why your iPhone 14 is getting hot

Almost every overheating iPhone has an ordinary explanation, and it is worth ruling those out before assuming a fault.

A phone that has just been updated, restored or set up from a backup will run warm for a day or two while it re-indexes photos and re-downloads content in the background. That is normal and it settles. Charging while gaming or navigating puts heat in from two sources at once, and a thick case holds it in. Wireless charging runs warmer than a cable by design. And in Singapore, a phone left on a car dashboard or used in direct sun will get hot without any help from software at all.

Practical steps: take the case off while charging, avoid charging and gaming simultaneously, and look in Settings under Battery to see whether one app is dominating background activity. Give it a day or two after any iOS update before drawing conclusions.

What is worth bringing in: a 14 that gets hot sitting idle, a phone that reaches the temperature-warning screen in ordinary use, heat concentrated in one spot rather than spread across the back, or heat that arrived alongside a sudden drop in battery life. Those patterns point at the battery or at something on the logic board drawing more current than it should, and both are worth a free diagnosis rather than tolerating. Persistent heat also ages the battery faster, so it tends to compound.

Battery health falling faster than it should

Open Settings, then Battery, then Battery Health & Charging. A few percent lost in the first year is normal and then it usually flattens out. What is not normal is several percent a month, or a two-year-old phone already well below 90%.

Heat is nearly always the accelerant. A lithium cell ages faster from sustained warmth than from cycle count, which is why the same phone lasts differently in an air-conditioned office and in a hot car. Charging overnight under a pillow or a blanket is one of the worst habits for battery life, and gaming inside a thick case is another. Leave Optimised Battery Charging switched on, keep the phone cool while it charges, and there is no need to run it down to zero — that is an old habit from a different battery chemistry.

Below roughly 80% capacity you will see the word Service, and that is the point at which iOS may also start limiting peak performance to prevent unexpected shutdowns. That is why an ageing iPhone often feels slow before it feels short of charge. A fresh battery restores both. Screen not responding to touch

A screen that has stopped responding is alarming, but a good proportion of these are not a broken screen at all. Work through it in order.

Force restart first. An unresponsive display is sometimes iOS having frozen rather than hardware, and a force restart clears it in seconds. Then remove the screen protector. A cheap protector, one that has started to lift at a corner, or moisture trapped underneath it will block touch surprisingly effectively. Then dry your hands and the screen, because capacitive touch does not work reliably through water — a genuinely common cause in humid weather and after rain.

If it survives all three, the pattern tells us where to look. Touch dead in one horizontal or vertical band usually means a digitiser or connector fault. Phantom taps, or the screen registering presses you did not make, point the same way and sometimes at a failing panel. Touch that works only intermittently, or that fails when the phone flexes slightly, is very often a connector unseated by a drop rather than a dead screen — which is a far smaller repair, and one you would never know about if a shop simply sold you a display.

Tell us if the phone has been dropped or has been wet. Both change the likely diagnosis substantially, and both are things we would rather know at the counter than discover on the bench.

Screen replacement

Every iPhone 14 model uses an OLED panel. Our band for the family runs from around S$300 to S$500 against Apple’s S$429 to S$575. As with any iPhone screen quote in Singapore, the figure only means something once you know whether it covers a glass-only repair or a full display replacement. Glass-only re-laminates a new outer layer onto your existing panel — cheaper, legitimate, but only possible where the OLED underneath is completely undamaged, with no lines, no dark patches and no dead touch. If the panel itself is damaged, glass-only is not an option at any price. It is the main reason two quotes for “the same repair” can differ by hundreds of dollars, so ask which one you are being quoted.

What else fails on an iPhone 14

Charging complaints are frequent and mostly benign: compacted lint in the Lightning port stops the cable seating, which behaves exactly like a dead port. Cleaning it out is often the whole repair and we do it as part of the free diagnosis — try a different known-good cable first, since that alone solves a fair number of cases. Camera complaints are worth diagnosing rather than assuming. The lens cover over each camera is a separate piece of glass from the module beneath it, so a cracked cover produces hazy, flared photos that look exactly like a broken camera while the module is fine — a much smaller job. Before you bring it in

Back the phone up to iCloud or a computer — no screen or battery job touches your data, but it is the right habit before any repair. Turn off Find My iPhone and have your passcode ready, because we cannot power up and properly test a locked phone. Take the case and screen protector off. If the fault is intermittent, note when it happens: “only while charging”, “only after it gets warm” or “only since the update” narrows a diagnosis enormously and can save you money.
