How to speed up a slow laptop
A laptop that has slowed to a crawl is one of the most common problems we see, and the good news is that most of the time it is fixable — often for free, sometimes with one well-chosen upgrade. This guide puts the biggest wins first, then the free software fixes, then the hardware and heat problems that quietly steal your speed, so you can work out what your machine actually needs.
If your laptop still has a mechanical hard disk, upgrading to an SSD is the single biggest change you can make — nothing else comes close. Add RAM if the machine slows down as you open more apps and tabs. Before spending anything, work through the free fixes: trim start-up items, close background apps and spare browser tabs, keep about 15% of your disk free, uninstall bloatware, scan for malware, install updates and restart regularly. If the laptop runs hot and loud, heat is throttling it, and a thermal service can bring the speed back. When none of that helps, or the drive is failing, it is time for a proper diagnosis.

The biggest wins: SSD and RAM
It is tempting to start with cleanup utilities and settings, but if your laptop is a few years old the largest speed gains are almost always in the hardware. Start here, because a single upgrade can do more than a whole afternoon of tweaking.
Upgrade to an SSD — the biggest change of all
If your laptop still uses a mechanical hard disk, this is the upgrade that changes everything. A hard disk has a spinning platter and a moving arm, and that mechanical design is the reason an older machine takes minutes to boot, freezes when you open a program, and stutters whenever more than one thing is happening. A solid-state drive has no moving parts and reads data many times faster, so the very same laptop boots in seconds and stays responsive under load. Add RAM if you are memory-limited
Memory is the second big lever, but only for the right symptom. RAM helps when the laptop slows down specifically as you open more programs and browser tabs, rather than being slow all the time. When the machine runs out of memory it starts shuffling data to and from storage, which is dramatically slower and feels like a stall. If that is you — many tabs open, a few apps running, everything grinds — adding RAM gives the system room to breathe. One important caveat: Apple silicon and newer machines
Not every laptop can be upgraded. On Apple silicon MacBooks (M1 and later) and recent Intel Macs, the RAM and storage are soldered directly to the board and cannot be changed after you buy the machine — so the practical advice is to choose enough memory and storage when you order it, because you cannot add more later. Many older Intel laptops and MacBooks are the opposite: their storage, and often their memory, can be upgraded cheaply, which is exactly why an SSD swap is such good value on those models. Free software fixes, in order
Plenty of slowness has nothing to do with hardware, and these fixes cost nothing but a little time. Work through them roughly in this order — the earlier ones tend to give the biggest, safest returns.
- Reduce start-up and login items. Every program that launches with your laptop competes for resources the moment you log in. Trimming that list to what you actually need is the single most effective free fix, and it makes the machine feel quicker from the first second. - Close background apps and spare browser tabs. A modern browser with thirty tabs open can use more memory than everything else combined. Close what you are not using, quit apps that sit running in the background, and watch how much lighter the machine feels.
- Free up disk space. A drive that is almost full slows the whole system down, because it needs headroom to work in. Keep roughly 15% of the drive free as a rule of thumb. Empty the recycle bin or trash, clear downloads you no longer need, and move large photo and video libraries to external or cloud storage.
- Uninstall bloatware and programs you do not use. New laptops often ship with trial software and utilities that run in the background for no benefit to you. Removing what you never open frees memory and start-up slots and reduces clutter.
- Scan for malware. A machine that suddenly became slow, shows pop-ups, or has a fan running hard while idle may be running something it should not. Run a full scan with your built-in security tool or a reputable scanner, and remove anything it flags.
- Keep the operating system and drivers updated. Updates carry performance and stability fixes as well as security patches. An out-of-date system can be slower and buggier than it needs to be, so let pending updates install and restart to apply them.
- Turn off heavy visual effects. Animations, transparency and other eye-candy cost a little performance that an older machine would rather spend elsewhere. Both Windows and macOS let you reduce or disable these effects, which can noticeably smooth out an ageing laptop.
- Restart regularly. Leaving a laptop on or asleep for weeks lets memory leaks and background processes pile up. A simple full restart clears them out, and it is astonishing how often that alone brings a sluggish machine back to life.
None of these steps involves opening the laptop, and all of them are safe to do yourself. Give them an afternoon before you reach for your wallet — and if the machine is still slow afterwards, that is genuinely useful information, because it points you toward the hardware causes below.
Heat: the hidden speed thief
One of the most overlooked causes of a slow laptop is heat, and it is especially common in Singapore. When a processor gets too hot, it deliberately slows itself down to avoid damage — a protective behaviour called thermal throttling. You did nothing wrong; the chip is simply choosing safety over speed. The trouble is that this can happen far more than it should on a machine that is not cooling properly.
Over a few years, dust builds up inside the fans and vents and the thermal paste that carries heat off the chips dries out and loses its grip. The laptop then runs hotter, throttles sooner and feels sluggish under any real load — often with fans spinning loudly, a chassis that is hot to the touch, and sometimes random shut-downs. The fix is a thermal service: cleaning out the cooling system and replacing the old paste with fresh compound, so heat leaves the chips efficiently again. This is workshop work, not a DIY job; opening a laptop and repasting a processor is easy to get wrong and can void what warranty remains. Windows and Mac: quick steps
The principles above are the same on both platforms, but the menus differ. Here is where to look on each.
On Windows
- Start-up items: open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc), go to the Start-up tab, and disable anything you do not need at login.
- Check memory and disk: in Task Manager's Performance tab, watch the Memory and Disk figures while you work. Memory sitting near full means you are RAM-limited; a disk pinned at 100% often means a slow or failing drive.
- Free space and cleanup: use Storage settings and the built-in cleanup tools to clear temporary files, and uninstall unused programs from Apps.
- Visual effects: search for "adjust the appearance and performance of Windows" and choose to reduce or disable animations.
On a Mac
- Login items: open System Settings, then General → Login Items, and remove apps you do not need at every start-up.
- Check memory: open Activity Monitor and look at the Memory Pressure graph. Yellow or red under normal use means the machine wants more RAM.
- Free space: in System Settings under General → Storage, review what is using space and offload large libraries.
- Reduce motion: in Accessibility settings, turn on Reduce Motion and reduce transparency to lighten the interface.

Software, hardware or just old age?
Speeding up a slow laptop really comes down to correctly identifying which of three things you are dealing with. Getting this right saves you from spending money on the wrong fix.
- It is software when the machine has enough RAM and a healthy SSD but is cluttered — too many start-up items, a full disk, bloatware, an out-of-date system, or malware. Here, the free fixes above are the whole answer, and they cost nothing.
- It is hardware when a single change transforms the machine — an SSD in place of a hard disk, more RAM for a memory-limited system, or a thermal service for one that overheats. It is also hardware, and more urgent, when a drive is failing: long freezes, files that will not open, and clicking or beeping noises mean you should back up immediately and get it diagnosed rather than tuned.
- It is age when a clean, up-to-date machine with an SSD and enough RAM still cannot keep up with what you ask of it. At that point the question shifts from speeding it up to whether it is worth keeping, which is exactly what our repair-or-replace guide is for. The reassuring part is that the first two categories cover the large majority of slow laptops, and both are fixable. Genuine end-of-life is rarer than people fear, and even then, an SSD upgrade is frequently what tips a machine back from "replace" to "keep".
