It is not storage; it is the desk your computer works on. When the desk is big enough, everything you are using stays within reach and switching between tasks is instant. When the desk is too small, the machine is forced to shuffle things off to the much slower storage drive to make room, then drag them back when you need them again. That constant shuffling — called paging or swapping — is the single most common reason a laptop that was once fine now feels broken.
This is why a memory upgrade transforms a machine that a new processor would barely improve. Moving from 8GB to 16GB, or to 32GB, ends the swapping that makes a browser full of tabs, a video call with a document open behind it, or any real multitasking feel like wading through mud. Tabs stop reloading when you click back to them. Applications stop freezing when you Alt-Tab between them. The machine stops thrashing its disk every time you open one more thing. - Everything slows down the moment you multitask. One app is fine, but open a second and a third and the whole machine bogs down. Memory usage sits pinned near the top the entire time.
- Browser tabs reload when you return to them. You switch back to a tab you had open minutes ago and it visibly refreshes, losing your place — the browser was forced to dump it to free memory.
- Stutter and hitching in apps and games. Editors, design tools and games pause and jerk not because the processor is busy but because the system is paging data in and out of the drive.
- "Low memory" or "out of memory" warnings. The operating system tells you directly, sometimes closing applications on its own to cope.
- The storage drive is constantly working. Heavy, continuous disk activity during ordinary tasks is the sound of the machine paging — memory pressure spilling onto the drive.
- Switching between open apps feels sluggish. Alt-Tab or clicking the taskbar brings a pause and a redraw instead of an instant switch, because the app you want was swapped out.

- Number of slots. One free slot or two changes what is possible: two slots allow a matched pair and dual-channel operation, while a single slot means one module and a single channel.
- DDR4 versus DDR5, and the supported speed. The two generations are physically keyed so they cannot be mixed or fitted to the wrong board, and each machine supports a specific speed. Fitting a faster module than the board supports simply runs it slower, so we match the exact spec.
- Single versus dual channel. Two matched modules run faster than one of the same total size, which particularly helps laptops that rely on integrated graphics. Where the slots allow it, a matched pair is the better buy.
- The CPU and chipset maximum capacity. Every processor and chipset has a ceiling on how much memory it can address. There is no point buying 64GB for a machine that tops out at 16GB, so we confirm the maximum the platform supports before recommending a size.

Our laptop RAM upgrade process, step by step
Every memory job follows the same disciplined path, whether it is a simple capacity bump or diagnosing a suspected fault. The checking matters more than the fitting — anyone can push a module into a slot; getting the spec right and proving the result is stable is the actual work.
- Identify the exact spec and free slots from the model. We confirm the make and model, open the machine where needed, and establish whether the memory is socketed or soldered, how many slots are free, and the generation — DDR4 or DDR5 — and speed the board runs.
- Confirm the maximum supported capacity. We check the ceiling the CPU and chipset can address so the upgrade is sized to what the platform actually supports, not to the largest number the slots would physically accept.
- Source matched modules in the right speed. We select memory in the correct generation and supported speed, and where the machine has two free slots we fit a matched pair so it runs in dual channel rather than a single, slower channel.
- Install carefully and correctly seated. The modules are fitted with the machine powered down and safely earthed, seated fully and latched, and where memory is partly soldered the added module is matched to what is already on the board so the whole machine runs at the fastest mode it supports.
- Run a full memory test to verify stability. We run a full memtest across the memory — multiple passes — to prove the new capacity is stable under exhaustive read-write patterns. This is the step that catches a marginal module or a bad slot before the machine goes back to you, and it is the same test we run when diagnosing a suspected fault rather than upgrading.
- Confirm the OS sees the new capacity. Finally we boot the machine and check that the operating system reports the full new amount of memory and that it is running at the correct speed and channel configuration, so you can see the result yourself before you leave.
One honest limit sits at the front of every quote: if the memory is soldered to the board, no upgrade is possible, and we tell you that on day one rather than after you have travelled or paid. In that case the practical routes are a different machine, or making the most of what you have — often paired with an SSD upgrade, which speeds up the paging that a full memory bank causes and is frequently the better-value move on a soldered ultrabook. Where a machine will not POST at all after a memory change, or shows no display with fans running, the fault can sit deeper on the board; that becomes a motherboard repair question and we diagnose it on the bench before recommending anything.
Buying the right memory, and a few honest notes
There is very little "maintenance" for RAM — it has no moving parts and no wear item — but a handful of decisions at purchase and upgrade time make all the difference between memory that quietly works for years and a machine that never runs as fast as it should:
- Buy matched modules in the right speed. Memory that matches in size, generation and speed runs predictably; mismatched modules can force the whole bank down to the slowest one's timings or refuse to run in the fastest mode. Getting the spec right is most of the job.
- Prefer dual channel where the slots allow it. Two matched modules beat a single module of the same total capacity for bandwidth, and integrated graphics especially benefit. If your machine has two free slots, a matched pair is the better buy.
- Choose enough RAM at purchase, because some machines are soldered. On an ultrabook or an Apple silicon Mac the memory can never be changed after you buy it, so the amount you pick at the shop is the amount you are stuck with for the life of the machine. When buying new, size the memory for the years ahead, not just today.
- Seating and correct spec matter more than any tweak. Most "bad RAM" we see is really a module that was not seated fully, or the wrong spec fitted in a hurry. A properly seated, correctly specified module in a healthy slot is stable memory; there is no maintenance ritual beyond getting those two things right.
