What water damage data recovery really means
When liquid gets into a laptop or MacBook, two very different questions follow. The first is can the machine be fixed — that is a repair question, and it is answered on our laptop water damage repair bench. The second, and usually the more urgent one, is can I get my files back. This page is about the second question. It is the data-first service: the one you want when a spill or a flood has killed the machine and what actually matters is the photos, the thesis, the accounts, the years of work sitting on the drive — not whether the laptop ever switches on again.
The distinction matters because the two jobs pull in different directions. A repair tries to return a reliable, everyday machine. A recovery only needs the storage to stay readable for long enough to copy every byte off it once, safely, onto our own hardware. We will happily power a corroded board up for ninety seconds to read the data out and then never trust that board again — because for a recovery, the board is a means to the files, not the deliverable. Two hardware realities shape every liquid recovery, and it is worth understanding which one you are dealing with before you arrive. On most Windows laptops the storage is removable — a 2.5-inch SATA disk or an M.2 SSD that unclips from the board. That is the friendlier case: the storage can be taken out, cleaned, and read entirely independently of the dead machine. On Apple silicon and T2 MacBooks, and on many thin ultrabooks, the storage is soldered to the mainboard and often cryptographically paired to it. That is the harder case, and the one where speed and skill matter most, because the only way to the data may run through a board the liquid is actively destroying.
Why corrosion turns a spill into a race
People assume the danger from a spill is the short circuit at the moment liquid bridges two contacts. That first short is real, but it is rarely what loses the data. The slower, more destructive process is electrochemical corrosion. Water — especially the sugary, salty, acidic liquids people actually spill, like coffee, kopi, soft drinks and seawater — carries ions that let tiny currents flow across the board even after it looks dry. Those currents strip metal off traces, pads and the fine contacts around the storage controller. The board keeps quietly dissolving itself for days.
This is why time is the single biggest factor in whether we get your files back, far more than the size of the spill. A machine brought in the same day, powered off, usually still has clean contacts around the storage and a good chance of a straightforward image. The same machine left in a drawer for a week — or worse, switched on every day to check whether it still works — often arrives with lifted pads, green corrosion crusted over the controller, and a job that has turned from a simple read into chip-level surgery, or into a loss we cannot honestly reverse. The situations we recover data from
Liquid-damage recoveries arrive in a few recognisable shapes. None of these is hopeless on its own, and several look far worse than they are once the storage is out of the machine:
- Spilled laptop, now completely dead. Coffee, water or a drink went into the keyboard and the machine will not power on at all. On most Windows laptops the drive is removable, so a dead machine does not mean lost data — we recover from the drive, not the laptop.
- MacBook will not boot after a spill. No chime, no display, or a machine that powers but hangs. Because the storage is soldered and encrypted, this is the case where cleaning the board quickly and reading the data out through the machine matters most.
- A drive pulled from a flooded machine. You or another shop already removed the SSD or hard disk from a water-damaged laptop and want the files off it. We clean the contacts and image it on write-blocked hardware.
- Worked at first, then died days later. The classic corrosion pattern — the machine seemed fine after the spill, then degraded and failed over days. The data is often still there if we reach the storage before the corrosion does.
- Flood, burst pipe or monsoon water. Whole-machine immersion from an aircon leak, a burst pipe, or a flooded ground-floor unit. Dirty flood water is aggressive, so these are same-day jobs whenever possible.
- Powers on but files are inaccessible. The machine runs but the drive is not detected, throws errors, or the volume will not mount — a corroded controller or a failing SSD that must be imaged before it deteriorates further.

How we recover data from a liquid-damaged machine, step by step
Every liquid recovery follows the same disciplined path, and the whole point of a fixed process is that the most fragile step — the one copy off your original storage — is done once, cleanly, and never gambled with.
- Stop the damage. The machine comes apart, the battery is disconnected first, and any standing liquid and corrosion is removed. Killing the current flow is what stops the corrosion clock ticking, so this happens before anything else.
- Identify the storage type. We establish whether the storage is a removable 2.5-inch SATA disk or M.2 SSD, or flash soldered to the board. This single fact decides which of the two routes below the recovery takes.
- Removable storage: clean, then image. A removable drive comes out of the machine. We clean corrosion off its contacts and connector, re-tin pads if needed, and connect it to a write-blocker — a device that physically prevents anything being written back to your disk. We take a full sector-by-sector image onto our own hardware, and every recovery attempt afterwards runs against that image, never against your original drive.
- Soldered storage: clean the board, read it out. Where the flash is soldered — Apple silicon and T2 MacBooks, many ultrabooks — the drive cannot be removed and read elsewhere. We clean the board corrosion under the microscope, clear affected pads and traces, and bring the board up just long enough to read the data out through the machine. Where the design allows and the board is too far gone, we work at chip level instead.
- Recover and verify. From the image or the read-out data we rebuild the file system, recover the files, and verify that documents, photos and mailboxes actually open — a recovery is not finished until the data is proven good, not merely copied.
- Return and wipe. Your recovered data is handed back on an encrypted drive or a medium you choose. Once you confirm you have everything, our working copies are securely wiped.
Do not keep powering a spilled machine. If liquid has gone in, the most damaging thing you can do is leave it on or keep switching it on to test it. Corrosion spreads with every second of current across wet contacts, and each boot risks a short taking the storage controller with it. Power it off, disconnect the charger, and bring it in the same day. Speed is the difference between a simple image and a chip-level rescue — or a loss.
One honest caveat sits at the front of every soldered-storage quote. On Apple silicon and T2 MacBooks the flash is not only soldered but encrypted and paired to the machine's security chip, so the chips cannot simply be moved to a working board and read. If the liquid has killed the security element or the storage controller itself, recovery may not be possible at any price. We establish that early and tell you plainly, rather than run up a bench bill on a job that cannot succeed. What not to do after a spill or flood
Most of the unrecoverable liquid jobs we see were made worse after the spill, not by it. A few minutes of the wrong instinct can turn a strong recovery into a lost one. Please do not:
- Keep using it to "copy files off quickly". This is the most common and most costly mistake. Every minute powered drives corrosion and risks a short killing the storage controller. Power it off instead and let us image the drive on our hardware.
- Bury it in rice. Rice does nothing for corrosion already forming inside, and leaves starch and dust behind. Drying the outside is not the same as stopping the chemical damage within.
- Point a hairdryer at it. Heat and forced air push liquid deeper under chips and connectors and can cook components. It spreads the problem rather than solving it.
- Run recovery software over and over. Repeatedly scanning a corroding drive keeps it powered and working at exactly the moment it is most fragile, and can write to it. The first safe copy should be a write-blocked image, not a consumer app hammering a dying disk.
- Leave it for days to "dry out". Time is the enemy here. Every day the corrosion advances. A machine that seems fine now can be beyond recovery a week later.
- Try to open it up and wash it yourself. Well-meant flushing with tap water adds more ions and corrosion; ultrasonic cleaning and proper corrosion removal belong on a bench.
The spills and floods we see most
Liquid damage in Singapore has a familiar cast of causes, and knowing the culprit helps us anticipate how aggressive the corrosion will be:
- Drinks over the keyboard. Coffee, kopi, tea, soft drinks and water are the everyday cause. Sugary and milky drinks are worse than plain water because the residue is sticky and conductive.
- Aircon and ceiling leaks. Condensation drips and leaking aircon units catch laptops left on desks and beds overnight — often discovered only when the machine will not turn on in the morning.
- Burst pipes and flooding. Ground-floor units, storerooms and the occasional monsoon flood submerge machines in dirty water, which is the most corrosive scenario of all.
- Bags and bottles. A water bottle that leaks inside a backpack soaks a laptop slowly for hours before it is noticed — plenty of time for corrosion to take hold.
- Rain and humidity. Caught in a downpour, or long-term exposure to Singapore's humidity, can corrode contacts even without a dramatic spill.

My laptop was spilled on and it still switches on — should I keep using it to copy my files off?
No. This is the single most common way people turn a recoverable machine into an unrecoverable one. Every minute it stays powered, current is driving electrochemical corrosion across wet contacts, and every boot risks a shorted rail taking the storage controller with it. Power it off, hold the button down to force it off if you must, unplug the charger, and do not try to copy files or run recovery software. Bring it to us the same day so we can shut the corrosion down and image the drive on our own hardware instead of your dying one.
What is the difference between water damage repair and water damage data recovery?
Repair aims to get the machine working again; recovery aims to get your files back, whether or not the machine ever runs again. This data recovery service exists for when that is not the goal or not viable — the board is too far gone, the repair is not worth it against the machine's value, or you simply need the files and will replace the laptop. Can you still recover data if the laptop is completely dead after a spill or flood?

A hairdryer pushes liquid deeper under chips and connectors and can drive heat into components. Leaving it to dry for days simply gives the corrosion days to eat through traces and drive contacts. Drying the outside is not the same as stopping the chemical damage inside. The only genuinely useful thing you can do is power it off and get it to a bench where the board can be properly cleaned quickly.

There is no fixed deadline we can promise, because it depends on the liquid and how much it was powered, but the rule never changes: the sooner it reaches a bench, the more we get back.
