What SSD data recovery really means

A solid-state drive stores your files in NAND flash memory — silicon chips with no moving parts — managed by a small dedicated processor called the controller. The controller keeps a private map, the translation layer, that turns the addresses your operating system asks for into the physical flash cells where the data actually sits. It also spreads writes evenly across the chips, retires cells as they wear, and manages the caches that make an SSD fast. When an SSD "fails", the flash holding your files is very often perfectly intact; what has broken is the controller, the firmware, or the map. Recovery, in most cases, is the work of getting past a broken manager to reach data that is still there.

That makes SSD recovery a fundamentally different craft from the hard-disk work most people picture. There are no platters to align, no heads to swap, and — importantly — no clean room required, because there is nothing mechanical to contaminate. Instead it is an electronics and firmware discipline: reading the controller, talking to it in its own language with manufacturer-specific tooling, and where necessary lifting the NAND chips off the board and reading them directly. The symptoms that point to a failing SSD

SSDs rarely warn you the way a clicking hard drive does. They tend to work perfectly right up to the moment they do not, which is exactly why a backup habit matters. Still, there are recognisable signs, and each one narrows what has gone wrong before the drive is ever opened:

  • The drive is not detected at all. It does not appear in the BIOS, in Disk Management or in Disk Utility. This usually points at a controller or firmware failure rather than dead flash, and the data behind it is frequently still intact.
  • It shows as RAW, unformatted, or corrupt. The drive is visible but the operating system cannot read the file system and offers to format it. Do not accept — this is translation-layer or file-system damage, and the files are usually recoverable if nothing is written.
  • The machine will not boot. It hangs, drops to a recovery screen, or reports no bootable device. The SSD may still hold your data even when it will no longer start the system.
  • Files and folders are disappearing. Documents vanish, folders turn to gibberish, or names become unreadable characters. This is a drive quietly remapping failing blocks — a sign to stop using it now.
  • SMART warnings and read errors. The system reports drive-health warnings, slows to a crawl, or freezes on certain files. The NAND is wearing out or the controller is struggling.
  • A folder with a question mark on a Mac. On MacBooks a flashing folder-with-a-question-mark means the machine cannot find a bootable drive — see our note on the folder-with-question-mark fault — which on soldered-storage models becomes a recovery question directly.

Turnaround assumes the drive behaves the way the symptom suggests; a failure we have not yet characterised never gets a fixed schedule.

How we recover a failed SSD, step by step

Every drive that reaches our bench follows the same disciplined path. The governing rule of all data recovery is written at the top of the job sheet: never write to the failing drive. Everything below is built around honouring that rule.

  1. Assessment and history. What the drive does now, what happened just before it failed — a format, a power cut, a spilt drink, a surge, an update — and whether it is an NVMe stick, a SATA drive, or NAND soldered to a board. The history often tells us the failure mode faster than any instrument, and it decides whether this is a logical job or an electronic one.
  2. Write-blocked imaging first. Wherever the drive still talks to hardware, we clone it — not repair it — through a write blocker that physically prevents any data reaching the drive. We work only ever from the image afterwards, so no matter what we try, the original is never altered and never degraded further.
  3. Controller and firmware work. A drive that is locked up, mis-reporting its capacity, or dropped into a safe mode is coaxed back with controller-specific and firmware-level tooling that speaks to the drive's own processor. This is the heart of SSD recovery and the reason consumer software cannot do it.
  4. Chip-off for soldered or dead-controller NAND. Where the controller is genuinely gone, or the storage is soldered to a laptop mainboard that has died, we can lift the NAND chips under the microscope, read them on a dedicated flash reader, and rebuild the data by reversing the controller's translation and error-correction. It is painstaking, but it reaches data nothing else can.
  5. Logical rebuild. Once we have a clean image, we repair the file system, reassemble the translation layer, and carve out files by signature where directory records are gone — recovering your documents, photos and folders from the raw flash content.
  6. Verify, then hand back. We confirm the recovered files open and are intact, copy them to media you approve, and return them to you. Nothing is written to your original drive at any stage, and the recovered copy is securely wiped from our systems once you confirm you have everything.

While the drive is still in your hands, please do not:

  • Keep powering a failing SSD on and off. Every boot lets a struggling controller remap and rewrite blocks over the very data you want back. Power it down and leave it down.
  • Reformat it or accept the "do you want to format?" prompt. A format writes new structures over your files and, on an SSD, can trigger the drive to wipe old blocks for good.
  • Run consumer recovery software over and over. Repeated deep scans make a dying drive work harder, generate writes, and routinely turn a recoverable case into an unrecoverable one. One careful pass by hardware beats twenty by software.

If the drive still reads at all, the safest move is to switch it off and bring it in. A drive imaged early recovers far better than one that has been fought with for a week.

What actually causes SSDs to fail

Understanding how an SSD dies explains both why recovery is possible and why some cases genuinely are not. These are the failure modes we see, and what each means for your data:

  • NAND wear-out. Flash cells tolerate a finite number of writes. As they wear, the drive retires blocks until it runs out of spares and starts losing data. Files disappear, errors climb, then the drive slows or drops out. Caught early, the readable NAND can usually still be imaged.
  • Controller and firmware failure. The processor or its firmware corrupts — often after a bad power event — and the drive vanishes, mis-reports its size, or refuses to mount. The flash is typically fine; the manager in front of it is not. This is the most recoverable class of SSD failure.
  • Sudden electronic death. A power surge, a failed regulator, or a shorted component kills the drive instantly with no warning. Recovery depends on whether the fault is in the power path or the controller, and sometimes on a board-level repair to bring the flash back online long enough to image it.
  • Corruption. An interrupted write, a failed firmware update, or a translation-layer glitch leaves the file system RAW or the folders scrambled while the hardware is healthy. Usually strongly recoverable.
  • Accidental format or deletion. The one honest exception — see the TRIM caveat below.
  • Encryption without a key. BitLocker, FileVault, or a self-encrypting drive protects your data by making it unreadable without the password or key. That protection applies to us too: recovery of the raw flash is possible, but the contents stay encrypted until you supply the key.

The TRIM caveat, told straight. This is where SSDs differ from hard disks and where we will not sell you false hope. Modern operating systems issue a command called TRIM that lets the drive erase deleted blocks in the background, often within minutes, to keep it fast. On a healthy, TRIM-enabled internal SSD, files you deleted or lost to a quick format are frequently physically erased, not merely hidden — and when that has happened, no tool, ours or anyone's, can bring them back. The odds improve if TRIM was disabled, if the drive sat in an external USB enclosure that never passed TRIM, or if you stopped using it the instant the files went. We check honestly and tell you what is genuinely left before you spend anything.

NVMe, SATA and soldered SSDs — three drives, three paths

The recovery route depends heavily on the physical form of the drive. An NVMe M.2 stick and a 2.5-inch SATA SSD are both removable, so we can pull them, image them on write-blocked hardware, and take them to controller tooling directly — the cleanest starting point. Soldered SSDs are the hard case: on many ultrabooks and every recent Apple silicon and T2 MacBook the flash is fixed to the mainboard with no drive to remove. If the board lives, we recover through it. If the board is dead, we attempt a board-level or chip-off read — and here sits the caveat we raise before touching an Apple machine: the storage is encrypted and cryptographically paired to that board's security chip, so if the security element itself is destroyed, the raw NAND is mathematically unreadable even in our hands. Confidentiality, and honesty about outcomes

Your data is private, and we treat it that way. Recovered files are handled only by the technician on your job, kept on isolated media, never uploaded to any cloud, and returned to you before being securely wiped from our systems once you confirm you have them. We do not browse your contents beyond what it takes to verify the recovery worked. If your drive is encrypted with your own key, we cannot read it without that key — and that is your privacy working exactly as intended.

We are equally honest about outcomes. Some SSD cases are not recoverable, and pretending otherwise would waste your time and money. Blocks that TRIM has already erased are gone. NAND that has been physically destroyed by fire, crushing, or severe surge damage cannot be read if the silicon itself is broken. A board-paired encrypted drive whose security chip is dead cannot be decrypted. When a case is in one of these categories we tell you at the assessment stage, before you commit — and under our policy, if we cannot recover your data you do not pay a recovery fee. That candour is the whole basis of the trade; it is the same standard we hold to across every job on our laptop repair bench.

When to stop and see a professional

Some situations are worth a careful DIY attempt; most SSD failures are not, because the tools that help a hard drive can quietly finish off an SSD. Bring the drive to a professional — and stop touching it now — if any of these apply:

  • The drive is not detected by the BIOS or the operating system, or shows the wrong capacity.
  • It shows as RAW or corrupt and offers to format — never accept that prompt.
  • Files are actively disappearing or the drive throws SMART warnings and read errors.
  • The data matters and there is no backup — the value of the files, not the drive, sets the stakes.
  • The SSD is soldered to a laptop or MacBook board, or the host machine has died.
  • You have already run recovery software once and it did not help — do not run it again; each pass raises the risk.

Often yes. I accidentally deleted or formatted my SSD. Are the files still recoverable?

This is the one place we have to be blunt, because it is different from a hard disk. Modern SSDs use a command called TRIM that tells the drive to wipe deleted blocks in the background, usually within minutes. On a healthy, TRIM-enabled SSD, files that were deleted or lost to a quick format are very often genuinely gone — not hidden, but physically erased — and no software on earth can bring them back. The odds are better if TRIM was disabled, if the drive is in an external enclosure that does not pass TRIM, or if you stopped using the drive immediately. Bring it in powered off and we will tell you honestly what is left.

Do you need a dust-free clean room to recover an SSD?

No. That is a hard-disk requirement, not an SSD one. A mechanical hard drive stores data on spinning platters that a single dust particle can destroy, so opening one safely needs a clean-room environment. An SSD has no platters and no moving parts — your data lives in NAND flash memory chips, which are sealed silicon. SSD recovery is an electronics and firmware problem solved at a microsoldering bench with the right controller tooling, so it does not need a clean room. What it does need is discipline about never writing to the failing drive.

Can you recover data from a soldered SSD in an ultrabook or a MacBook?

Sometimes, and it is one of the harder jobs on the bench. Many thin laptops and every recent Apple silicon and T2 MacBook solder the storage directly to the mainboard, so there is no drive to remove. If the board is alive we recover through it normally. If the board is dead we can attempt a board-level or chip-off read of the NAND. The honest caveat on Apple silicon and T2 machines is that the storage is encrypted and cryptographically paired to that specific board's security chip — if the security element is destroyed, the raw NAND is unreadable even in our hands. We tell you which situation you are in before we start.

My SSD still works but files keep disappearing and it throws errors. What should I do?

Stop using it and power it down. Disappearing files, folders that turn to gibberish, a drive that shows as RAW, or SMART warnings are the early signs of a controller or NAND wear-out failure, and every extra hour of use lets the drive rewrite and remap blocks over the data you want.
