MacBook showing a flashing folder with a question mark? Here is what it means
A flashing folder with a question mark at startup looks like the end of your MacBook, but it is really one specific message: the Mac cannot find a disk with a working copy of macOS to boot from. Sometimes that is a harmless setting; sometimes it is a failing SSD. This guide walks Singapore MacBook owners through the safe, Apple-supported checks — for both Apple silicon and Intel models — and shows you the one sign that turns this from a quick fix into a data-recovery job.
The flashing folder means no valid startup disk was found. First, restart and try to select the disk yourself — on Apple silicon hold the power button and pick Macintosh HD; on Intel hold Option and choose it. If it boots, set it as the default in System Settings and you are done. If it will not appear, boot into Recovery and open Disk Utility. If your internal disk is listed, run First Aid and, if it passes, reinstall macOS — this keeps your files. But if the internal SSD is not listed at all, stop: that is a hardware failure, and the job becomes recovering your data, not erasing or reinstalling.

What the flashing question-mark folder means
When a Mac powers on, its firmware looks for a startup disk — a drive holding a valid, bootable copy of macOS — and hands control over to it. The flashing folder with a question mark appears when that search comes up empty: the Mac has power, it is running, but it cannot find anything to boot from. That is the whole message. It says nothing yet about why there is no startup disk, and the range of reasons is wide, running from completely harmless to genuinely serious. The trick is not to panic and not to erase anything until you know which end of that range you are on.
At the harmless end, the startup disk simply is not selected. This happens after certain updates, after connecting and booting from an external drive, or after the internal disk drops out of the firmware's saved boot setting. The macOS on your Mac is perfectly fine — the Mac just forgot which disk to use. Reselecting it fixes everything and touches nothing.
In the middle sit the software faults. A macOS install can be corrupted or partly deleted, most often by a failed macOS update that was interrupted part-way. The disk's directory — the index macOS uses to find files — can become corrupted, so the system files exist but the Mac cannot read them cleanly. In both cases the disk itself is healthy; the software living on it is damaged. These are repairable with Disk Utility's First Aid and, if needed, a macOS reinstall, and they usually do not cost you your files.
At the serious end is storage hardware failure. If the internal SSD has failed or become disconnected, the Mac genuinely has no disk to boot from — not because the software is damaged, but because the drive is no longer there as far as the Mac is concerned. On older Intel MacBooks this can even be a loose or failed drive cable rather than the storage itself. This is the case that changes the whole approach: when the disk is truly gone, the goal shifts from fixing the boot to protecting and recovering your data.
One Apple-specific point makes that last case matter more than it would on a Windows laptop. On Apple silicon MacBooks (M1, M2, M3 and later) and on Intel Macs with the T2 security chip, the SSD is soldered to the logic board and cryptographically paired to it. You cannot simply pull the drive and read it in another machine. So if the storage fails on one of these Macs, recovering the data is a specialist, board-level job — which is exactly why keeping a Time Machine or cloud backup is worth doing before anything goes wrong. Safe fixes you can try yourself
Work through these in order. They are all safe, Apple-supported, and none involves opening the MacBook or erasing anything. Between them they clear the large share of question-mark folders that are software or setting problems. The moment you reach a step that tells you the disk is missing, stop and skip to the professional section — do not push on to erasing or reinstalling.
- Restart and select the startup disk. Shut the Mac down fully, then bring up the disk picker. On Apple silicon (M1, M2, M3 and later), press and hold the power button until you see the startup options, then choose Macintosh HD and click Continue. On Intel, restart while holding the Option key until the disk icons appear, then pick Macintosh HD. If it boots, the disk was only unselected — go to the next step to make it stick.
- Set the disk as default so the folder does not return. Once you are back in macOS, open System Settings, then General, then Startup Disk, select Macintosh HD and set it. This writes the choice back into the firmware so the Mac boots to it every time and the flashing folder stops appearing.
- Boot into Recovery. If no bootable disk appears to select, start macOS Recovery. On Apple silicon, hold the power button, choose Options, then Continue; on Intel, hold Command and R at startup until you see the Apple logo or a spinning globe. Recovery loads independently of your startup disk, so it works even when the main system will not.
- Open Disk Utility and look for your disk. From the Recovery menu, open Disk Utility, then click View and choose Show All Devices. This is the single most important check on this whole page. If your internal drive is listed, you are dealing with a software problem and can continue. If the internal drive is not listed at all, stop here — that is a hardware failure, and the next section explains why erasing or reinstalling is the wrong move.
- Run First Aid on the internal disk. If the disk is listed, select it and click First Aid to check and repair the file system. If First Aid completes cleanly, the disk is healthy and the fault was directory or software damage — you can move on to the last step. If First Aid reports errors it cannot repair, that is a sign for the workshop rather than more DIY.
- Reinstall macOS (this keeps your files). If the disk passed First Aid, go back to the Recovery menu and choose Reinstall macOS, then follow the prompts and pick Macintosh HD as the destination. A reinstall replaces the system files while leaving your documents in place, so it fixes a corrupted or half-deleted macOS without wiping your data. Do not choose Erase first.
- Give a stubborn boot one clean restart. After a reinstall, shut down fully and start once more, holding the disk picker on Intel or the power button on Apple silicon, and select Macintosh HD to confirm it now boots on its own. If it does, you are done; if the folder returns, note exactly what Disk Utility showed and bring that detail to the workshop.
Do not click Erase on the internal disk to try to fix the folder — erasing deletes everything and is never the first move, and if the disk is failing it can make recovery harder. If the internal SSD is missing from Disk Utility, do not reinstall macOS either; there is no working disk to install onto, and repeated attempts stress a failing drive. And if your files are not backed up, treat a disappearing disk as a data-recovery case straight away rather than experimenting — especially on Apple silicon and T2 Macs, where the storage cannot simply be pulled and read elsewhere.
When to get professional repair
If you have selected the disk, booted into Recovery, and either the internal SSD does not appear in Disk Utility, or First Aid reports errors it cannot repair, or a reinstall will not complete, then the fault has moved past a safe home fix. At that point the cause is usually one of these, and each needs a workshop:
- A failed or disconnected internal SSD. When the disk is simply not there in Disk Utility, the storage has failed or lost its connection to the board. Please do not erase or reinstall in the meantime.
- A logic-board or storage-controller fault. On Apple silicon and T2 Macs the SSD is soldered and board-paired, so a controller fault can make the storage vanish even when the flash chips are fine. - A loose or failed drive cable (Intel). Older Intel MacBooks with a separate drive cable can throw the question-mark folder from a worn cable rather than a dead SSD — a comparatively small fix once it is correctly diagnosed on the bench.

Does the question-mark folder mean my SSD has failed and my data is gone?
Not necessarily. In many cases the data is completely intact and the Mac just could not find or select the disk, which a startup-disk selection or a macOS reinstall resolves without touching your files. The serious sign is when the internal SSD no longer appears in Disk Utility — that indicates the storage has failed or disconnected, and while the drive is unreadable the data is not necessarily lost. What you must not do is erase the disk or reinstall over it in the hope it helps; on a failing drive that can make recovery harder. If the files matter, treat a disappearing disk as a recovery case, not a reinstall.
Should I reinstall macOS or erase the disk to fix the flashing folder?
Only if the disk still appears and passes First Aid. Reinstalling macOS from Recovery is a safe, Apple-supported step that keeps your existing files, so it is fine when Disk Utility shows a healthy internal drive. Erasing the disk, however, deletes everything on it and should never be your first move — and if the SSD is missing from Disk Utility, neither erasing nor reinstalling will help, because there is no working disk to install onto. When the disk has disappeared, skip the reinstall entirely and get the storage and board checked, so a hardware fault is not mistaken for a software one.
