MacBook Wi-Fi dropping, slow or not connecting? Start here

Flaky Wi-Fi on a MacBook is maddening, but most of the time it is a network setting, a router quirk or a corrupt configuration rather than a broken machine. This guide walks Singapore MacBook owners through the safe macOS checks — none of which involve opening the Mac — shows you how to tell a software problem from a hardware one, and explains the point at which an antenna or a Wi-Fi component on the board means it is time for a workshop.

What causes MacBook Wi-Fi problems

"Wi-Fi issues" is a broad complaint that really covers three different symptoms, and it helps to be precise about which one you have. A connection that drops — it works, then falls off, then reconnects — behaves differently from one that is slow but stable, which is different again from a MacBook that will not connect at all or shows "No Hardware Installed". Each points at a different set of causes, so notice the exact behaviour before you start changing settings.

The single most useful thing you can do first is decide whether the problem is on the Mac or on the network. Test another Wi-Fi network — a phone hotspot is perfect. If your MacBook is rock-solid on the hotspot but drops on your home Wi-Fi, the router, the channel or interference is the culprit, and the Mac is fine. If it misbehaves on every network, the fault lives on the MacBook, and you can narrow it down from there. This one test saves hours of chasing the wrong thing.

On the software side, the usual suspects are a corrupt or stale network configuration, a network Location that has gone bad, and a self-assigned IP address — an address starting 169.254 that means the Mac connected to the Wi-Fi but never got a working address from the router, so nothing loads. A recent macOS update sometimes needs the network configuration rebuilt to settle down. A VPN or third-party security app can silently reset or block the link. And plain wireless interference — a crowded 2.4GHz band in an HDB block, a microwave, a neighbour's router on the same channel, or simply distance and walls between you and the router — slows or breaks a connection without anything being wrong with the Mac at all.

On the hardware side, two faults dominate. The first is the antenna: the Wi-Fi antennas sit up in the display assembly and their thin cables run through the hinge, where they can be pinched, chafed or partly disconnected — often after a drop, a spill, or a screen or hinge repair. That shows up as a weak signal that changes as you open, close or angle the screen, very short range, or a connection that only works right beside the router. The second is the Wi-Fi component itself. On older Intel MacBooks this is a small module on a connector that can work loose; on Apple silicon Macs the Wi-Fi is soldered onto the logic board and cannot simply be swapped, so a failed part there is board-level work. When macOS reports "No Hardware Installed" or the Wi-Fi menu disappears entirely, hardware is the likely reason.

Safe fixes you can try yourself

Work through these in order. They are all safe, none of them involves opening the MacBook, and between them they clear a large share of Wi-Fi complaints. Stop at the first one that works, and keep a note of what you have tried — it helps us if you do end up bringing the Mac in.

  1. Toggle Wi-Fi off and on. Click the Wi-Fi icon in the menu bar, switch it off, wait a few seconds, and switch it on again. This alone re-establishes a link that has quietly fallen over, and it is the fastest thing to rule out.
  2. Forget the network and rejoin. Open System Settings, go to Network, select Wi-Fi and click Details for your network, then choose "Forget This Network". Rejoin from the menu bar and re-enter the password. This rebuilds a saved network entry that has become corrupt — a very common cause of a network that connects but will not pass traffic.
  3. Test another network to isolate the fault. Turn on a phone hotspot, or try a different Wi-Fi, and see whether the MacBook behaves. If it is fine elsewhere but bad on your home network, the router or interference is the problem, not the Mac — restart the router and, if you can, move to the 5GHz band, which is less congested than 2.4GHz in a typical HDB block.
  4. Run Wireless Diagnostics. Hold the Option key and click the Wi-Fi menu, then choose "Open Wireless Diagnostics". It reads your signal strength and noise and can flag interference or a weak signal. A weak reading only on this Mac while other devices are strong is a useful pointer towards an antenna problem.
  5. Create a new network Location and renew the DHCP lease. In System Settings → Network, open the Location menu, add a new Location and switch to it — this gives macOS a clean network configuration. Then, for a self-assigned IP, open your Wi-Fi network's Details, go to the TCP/IP tab and click "Renew DHCP Lease" so the router hands the Mac a proper address.
  6. Update macOS and turn off VPN or security software. Install any pending macOS update, as Wi-Fi fixes often ship in point releases. Temporarily disable any VPN, firewall or third-party antivirus, which can quietly reset or block the connection, and test again.
  7. Remove and re-add the Wi-Fi service. In System Settings → Network, if the option is available, remove the Wi-Fi service with the minus button, then add it back with the plus button and reconnect. This forces macOS to rebuild the wireless service from scratch and clears a configuration that has gone bad.
Please don't do these

Do not open the MacBook to poke at the antenna or the Wi-Fi module yourself — the antenna cables are thin, routed through the hinge and easy to tear, and on Apple silicon Macs the Wi-Fi is soldered to the board where there is nothing to reseat. If the Wi-Fi failed straight after a spill, do not keep the Mac running or on charge; corrosion spreads. And if the problem only appeared after a screen, hinge or battery repair elsewhere, mention that — a disturbed antenna cable is a common, and fixable, cause.

When to get professional repair

If you have toggled Wi-Fi, forgotten and rejoined the network, renewed the DHCP lease, made a fresh Location, updated macOS and turned off any VPN — and the MacBook still misbehaves on every network — the fault has moved past a safe home fix. A few clear signs mean it is time for a workshop:

  • Weak signal only on this Mac. If Wireless Diagnostics shows a weak signal while other devices in the same room are strong, that usually means an antenna problem — a cable pinched, chafed or partly disconnected up in the display or at the hinge.   • Wi-Fi that vanishes entirely. "No Hardware Installed", or the Wi-Fi menu disappearing, means macOS can no longer see the wireless component. On Intel MacBooks that can be a loose module; on Apple silicon it is a soldered board component. Why does my MacBook keep dropping the Wi-Fi connection?

Repeated drops usually come from one of three places: a corrupt macOS network configuration, a router or signal problem, or a hardware fault. Start by testing another network — if your MacBook stays connected on a different Wi-Fi but drops on your home one, the router or interference is the suspect. If it drops on every network, the fault is on the Mac. Software causes include a stale network Location, a VPN or security app that resets the link, and macOS updates that need a fresh network configuration. Hardware causes include a pinched or loose antenna cable near the hinge, which typically shows as a weak signal that worsens when you open or move the screen.

How do I fix a self-assigned IP address on my MacBook?

A self-assigned IP — an address starting 169.254 — means your MacBook could not get a proper address from the router, so Wi-Fi shows connected but nothing loads. The safe fix is to renew the DHCP lease: open System Settings, go to Network, select Wi-Fi, click Details for your network, open the TCP/IP tab and click Renew DHCP Lease. If that does not hold, create a new network Location from the Location menu and rejoin the network. Restarting the router clears it too. If the self-assigned IP returns constantly across different networks, the Wi-Fi service or hardware may need a closer look.

Is slow Wi-Fi on my MacBook a hardware or a software problem?

Both are possible, and you can narrow it down without opening anything. Run Wireless Diagnostics — hold Option and click the Wi-Fi menu, then choose Open Wireless Diagnostics — to read your signal strength and noise. If other devices in the same room are fast but the MacBook is slow, and the signal reading is weak only on the Mac, that points to an antenna problem. If every device is slow, the router, the plan or channel congestion is more likely. Interference from 2.4GHz devices, a crowded channel, or distance from the router all slow a Wi-Fi link without any fault in the Mac.

My MacBook won't connect to Wi-Fi at all — what should I try first?

First toggle Wi-Fi off and back on from the menu bar, then forget the network and rejoin it with the password. If it still will not connect, test another network — a phone hotspot works — to see whether the problem follows the Mac. Restart both the MacBook and the router. Check that macOS is up to date, and temporarily disable any VPN or third-party security software, which can block a connection. If your MacBook connects to no network anywhere, even a fresh hotspot, after these steps, the Wi-Fi hardware itself may have failed and needs a workshop diagnosis.

Can a broken antenna cause MacBook Wi-Fi problems?

Yes. The Wi-Fi antennas run up into the display assembly, and the thin antenna cables pass through the hinge. A cable can be pinched, chafed or partly disconnected — often after a drop, a spill, a screen or hinge repair, or simply years of opening and closing. The classic symptom is a weak signal that changes as you move or angle the screen, very short Wi-Fi range, or a connection that only works right next to the router. The Wi-Fi option disappeared from my MacBook — is that fixable?

If the Wi-Fi menu shows No Hardware Installed, or the Wi-Fi option vanishes entirely, macOS can no longer see the wireless component. Sometimes a restart or a macOS update brings it back, so try those first. If it stays gone, the cause is usually the Wi-Fi hardware — a loose connector on Intel MacBooks, or the Wi-Fi component on the logic board, which on Apple silicon Macs is soldered on and cannot simply be swapped.
