Laptop keyboard not working: causes, tests and what each one costs
Where the dead keys sit on the keyboard tells you what failed. A straight line means a matrix fault, and a possible cheap fix. A scatter means individual contacts. Here is how to tell.

The matrix: why the pattern of dead keys is the diagnosis
A laptop keyboard controller does not run a wire to every key. It scans a grid, energising one row at a time and reading which columns respond. Under each key sits a cap, a scissor or butterfly retainer clip, and a rubber dome that closes two contacts printed on a laminated three-layer membrane.
So: open an on-screen keyboard tester, press every key, and photograph the dead ones. If they form a straight line — a row, or a column running diagonally down the physical layout — a matrix trace or the ribbon has failed, and there is a real chance of a cheap repair. If they are scattered, individual domes or contacts have failed. Two minutes of testing and you know more than the person quoting you.
Six faults and what they mean
- One or two dead keys. A torn dome, a broken retainer clip, or debris in the contact. Often repairable at the key for S$25–70.
- A key that repeats by itself. Intermittent contact closure from dried liquid residue, skin oil or a crumb. Cleaning fixes a meaningful share.
- A whole row or column dead. A matrix trace broken where the membrane folds into its ribbon tail, or a ribbon not seated in its ZIF connector. Sometimes a ninety-second fix.
- Whole keyboard dead, trackpad fine. Ribbon, connector, or the keyboard controller. We test at the connector before condemning the part.
- Keyboard and trackpad both dead. Suspect the embedded controller or a shared power rail on the mainboard. No keyboard will fix that — see board repair.
- Backlight dead, keys fine. A separate circuit and connector, and usually a separate, cheaper repair.
Rule out software first — it takes five minutes
Plug in a USB keyboard. If that works and the built-in one does not, the fault is hardware. If both misbehave, it is software or the controller. Check for a stuck modifier key (Windows announces Sticky Keys for a reason). Boot from a USB Linux image or into recovery: a keyboard that works there and not in Windows is a driver, not a membrane. And on machines with a Fn-lock, confirm somebody has not simply toggled it.

If liquid was involved, the keyboard is the symptom
Fluid passes straight through the membrane's key holes and cable slots onto the mainboard. The keyboard fails first because its contacts are the most exposed — which makes replacing it alone feel like a solution for about three weeks.
Any spill is a full-disassembly, ultrasonic-clean, board-inspection job, and the keyboard is fitted at the end of it. We have lost count of the machines that arrived here dead after someone else fitted a keyboard over a corroded board. Read what to do after a spill.

- MacBook top case assembly — S$300 – 480, includes a new battery and trackpad.
- Ribbon or connector repair — S$90 – 200, board-level.
- Spill: clean, board repair, keyboard — from S$220, quoted after inspection.

Keeping the next one alive
Drinks with lids, on the far side from your dominant hand. Crumbs out with a soft brush and low-pressure air at an angle — never compressed air blasted straight down, which drives debris under the caps, and never a vacuum, whose suction pulls caps and clips off. Wipe with a barely damp microfibre cloth. And do not prise keycaps off out of curiosity: the retainer clips are the most fragile part of the assembly, and they are exactly what breaks.

Why do some keys on my laptop repeat by themselves?
An intermittent contact closure — usually dried liquid residue, skin oil or a crumb bridging the membrane contact. On Apple's 2016–2019 butterfly keyboards, a single dust particle is enough. Lifting the cap and cleaning resolves a meaningful minority of cases before any part is needed.
Can you replace just one key?
Often, yes. A key is a cap, a retainer clip and a dome, and all three are available separately for most machines. What cannot be repaired key-by-key is a broken trace inside the laminated membrane. Testing which you have costs nothing.
How much is a laptop keyboard replacement in Singapore?
S$130–250 where the keyboard is a discrete serviceable part. S$260–480 where it is riveted into the top case, because the part then includes the palm rest, the trackpad and often the battery. Your machine's design decides which.
My keyboard stopped working after a spill. Is a new keyboard enough?
Almost never. Liquid reaches the mainboard through the membrane and corrodes it under power. The correct job is a full clean and board inspection first, keyboard last. A keyboard fitted over a corroded board typically fails within weeks, and the second repair costs more than doing it properly would have.
