Our laptop hinge repair process, step by step

Every machine that comes in for a hinge fault follows the same path. The point of a fixed process is that we find the true cause before deciding what to replace — because the difference between a hinge that needs swapping and a mount that needs rebuilding is thousands of dollars over the life of a workshop, and it is your money either way.

1. Symptom capture and history. What the lid does, when it started, and what happened just before — a knock, a one-handed open, a lid carried by the screen. How the fault began often tells us straight away whether we are looking at a worn hinge or torn mounts.
2. Full disassembly. The bezel, screen and hinge covers come off so we can see the hinge and its mounting points directly. There is no diagnosing a hinge properly from the outside — the damage is almost always hidden inside the lid and the top cover.
3. Assess hinge versus mounting points. We check the hinge itself for wear, stiffness and seizing, and we check the brass inserts and screw bosses that anchor it for cracks and pull-out. This is the whole diagnosis: is the metal at fault, is the plastic at fault, or both?
4. Replace worn or seized hinges. Where the hinge mechanism has genuinely worn or seized, we fit a replacement hinge so the lid moves cleanly and holds its tension again through the full range of travel.
5. Rebuild and re-anchor cracked mounts. Where the plastic bosses have split or torn, we rebuild and reinforce those anchor points with reinforcement and adhesive so the hinge is solidly held — rather than selling a whole chassis where the housing is otherwise sound. A full housing swap is reserved for plastic that is genuinely beyond rebuilding.
6. Address any hinge-caused damage. If the hinge has pinched the display cable or antenna, or stressed the panel to the point of cracking, we deal with that too — re-routing or replacing a damaged cable, or arranging a screen replacement where the panel itself has gone.
7. Refit and test. The machine is reassembled and we test the open-and-close action and lid retention through the whole range, checking the screen holds every angle and that the picture and wireless are stable as the lid moves — before it is handed back with a written warranty on the job sheet.

Two honest limits sit at the front of every quote. First, where the housing plastic is shattered rather than cracked, a rebuild will not hold and a full lid or chassis replacement is the right call — we will show you why on the bench rather than after you have paid. Preventive tips: how to keep your hinges healthy

Most of the hinges we rebuild failed for reasons that were, in hindsight, avoidable. A few small habits add years to a hinge's life, and they cost nothing:

• Open from the centre, with two hands. Lifting the lid by one corner twists the hinge and loads one mount far harder than the other. Open from the middle of the edge, or steady the base with one hand, so the load is shared evenly.
• Never lift or carry the laptop by the screen. The screen is not a handle. Picking the machine up by the open lid puts the entire weight of the base onto the hinges and their mounts — one of the fastest ways to tear them out.
• Do not force a stiff hinge — bring it in early. Stiffness is the warning, not the problem. Forcing a seized hinge is what cracks the plastic and the screen. A hinge that is only just starting to stiffen is a cheap, quick fix; a hinge that has already torn its mounts is not.
• Close the lid gently. Snapping the lid shut, or closing it on a pen or cable left on the keyboard, shocks the hinge and the mounts. Lower it under control every time.
• Go easy on convertible hinges. On 2-in-1 and 360-degree machines the hinges travel much further, so avoid over-extending them, forcing them past their natural stop, or leaving them folded fully back for long periods.
• Act on the first creak. A new creak, click or bit of stiffness is the hinge asking for attention. Handled at that stage it is almost always a small job — ignored, it becomes a chassis one.
