Laptop won't turn on: a diagnostic sequence you can run yourself
"Dead motherboard" is the most over-diagnosed fault in this trade. In our intake logs, roughly one no-power laptop in five genuinely needs a board. Here is how to work out which one you have.
On this page
First, define "won't turn on"
Four different faults hide behind that phrase, and separating them takes ten seconds:
- Nothing at all. No lights, no fan, no sound, no warmth. A power-path problem.
- Lights and fans, no picture. The board is alive. The problem is in the display chain, the GPU, or the memory.
- Turns on, then off, in a few seconds. A rail is collapsing, or a protection circuit is tripping. Frequently a short.
- Charging light on, machine dead. Power is arriving. Something downstream refuses to sequence.
Tell a technician which of those four you have and you have already halved the diagnosis. Guess "motherboard" and you have paid for one.
The nine checks, in order
- Try a different socket and a different charger. Chargers fail more often than laptops. If a friend has a compatible one, borrow it. On USB-C, borrow one rated for the same wattage.
- Look at the charger's LED, if it has one. An LED that goes out when you plug into the laptop means the laptop is pulling the supply down — a short. Stop and bring it in.
- Wiggle the barrel jack gently. Intermittent life means a worn DC-in jack, which is a cheap repair.
- Hold the power button for 30 seconds with the charger unplugged. This drains residual charge and resets the embedded controller. It resolves more machines than you would believe.
- Remove the battery if it is removable and try on mains alone. A failed pack can stop a healthy machine booting.
- Listen and feel. A fan twitch, a click, a warm spot near the charge port — all evidence the board has power.
- Shine a torch at the screen at an angle. A faint image means the machine booted and the backlight failed. That is not a dead laptop at all.
- Plug in an external monitor. A clean picture proves everything but the panel and its cable is working.
- Reseat the RAM if the machine is serviceable and the RAM is socketed. Fans spinning with no beep and no picture is a classic memory-seating fault.
If checks one to nine leave you with nothing at all — no lights, no fan, no warmth — then and only then are you in board territory. And board territory is not the same as board replacement.
What a proper workshop does next
The board goes on a bench power supply at its rated input voltage with the current limit set low. The first second of current draw tells us most of the story:
- Zero draw — the power path is open. A blown input fuse, a failed DC-in jack, a dead charging IC, or a broken trace. Cheap.
- High draw, no power-on — a rail is shorted to ground. Freeze spray or a thermal camera finds the component heating up. Nine times in ten it is a single ceramic capacitor, which costs cents.
- Normal standby, no boot — the board is alive but a rail is not sequencing. Now we read the schematic and probe the enable lines in order.
- Full boot current, no image — a display-chain fault, not a power fault.
That single number — the current draw — is why we can tell you in minutes what a parts-swapping shop can only guess at. More detail on our diagnostics page.

What each outcome costs
- Charger — S$40 – 120.
- DC-in jack or USB-C port — S$110 – 260, board-level, 1–2 days.
- Charging IC — S$140 – 300, 1–3 days.
- Shorted capacitor on a rail — S$120 – 260. The part costs cents; the finding is the work.
- Battery preventing boot — S$120 – 340.
- Backlight circuit — S$120 – 260.
- Genuine board replacement — several hundred to over a thousand, and the reason this page exists.
Before you agree to anything: your data
If the laptop is dead but the drive is healthy — which is the usual case — your files are recoverable in a day, independent of what happens to the machine. Ask for this before any irreversible repair. On MacBooks with T2 or Apple silicon, and on most Microsoft Surface devices, the storage is soldered to the board and encrypted to it: replacing the board destroys the data, while repairing the board preserves it. Say the words "data first" to whoever is quoting you. See data recovery.
Three things not to do
Do not keep pressing the power button on a machine that clicks or that made a smell. Do not open it and start unplugging cables unless you have a grounded bench — static damage does not announce itself, it just shortens the life of a component that fails three months later. And do not accept a motherboard quote from anyone who has not shown you the fault. If a shop cannot point at the component that failed, they have not found it.
Questions we get every week
Frequently asked questions
Does a dead laptop mean I have lost my data?
Almost never. In most no-power laptops the storage is completely healthy and can be imaged in a day. The exception is soldered, board-encrypted storage — MacBooks with T2 or Apple silicon, and most Surface devices — where the data survives a board repair but not a board replacement.
How much does it cost to fix a laptop that won't turn on in Singapore?
Most cases land between S$110 and S$300: a DC-in jack, a charging IC, or a shorted capacitor on a power rail. Genuine board replacement runs far higher, which is why the diagnosis is worth more than the repair. Our first-line diagnostics are free on arrival.
My charger light goes out when I plug it into the laptop. What does that mean?
Almost certainly a short circuit on the board pulling the supply down and triggering the charger's protection. Stop plugging it in. Continued attempts heat the shorted component and can take neighbouring parts with it. Bring the machine in.
Is it worth repairing a laptop that won't turn on?
Usually, because the fault is usually cheap once it is found. The question only becomes difficult when the board is physically destroyed — a snapped PCB, a crater where a connector was, a delaminated CPU package. We tell you that on day one rather than after you have paid for diagnostics.
