Laptop blue screen: reading the stop code before you reinstall anything
A blue screen is your computer telling you exactly what went wrong, in a language nobody taught you to read. Reinstalling Windows silences the message without fixing the fault — and on a failing drive it destroys the data you were about to lose.

The stop code is the diagnosis
Every blue screen shows a stop code — a short phrase in capitals near the bottom of the screen. It is not decorative. It names the subsystem that failed, and it narrows a limitless problem to one of four categories.
Photograph it. If it flashes past too quickly, the crashes are logged: on Windows, open Event Viewer, or install a minidump reader that decodes the crash file Windows writes to C:\Windows\Minidump. The driver named in that dump is very often the entire answer.
Four categories, and what each one means
Memory faults. Stop codes mentioning memory management, page faults in nonpaged areas, or irql-not-less-or-equal frequently point at RAM — a failing module, an unseated one, or memory running at an unstable speed. Test with Windows Memory Diagnostic overnight, or MemTest86 for a proper answer. Reseating socketed RAM is free and fixes a surprising share.
Storage faults. Codes referencing inaccessible boot devices, critical process death, or NTFS file-system errors usually mean the drive is failing or its file system is damaged. This is the dangerous category.
Driver faults. Codes naming a specific .sys file, or thrown after a driver update, are software. Roll the driver back, or boot into Safe Mode and remove it.
Hardware instability. Machine-check exceptions, clock watchdog timeouts and whea errors point at the CPU, the power delivery, or heat. Check temperatures first — a throttling, overheating machine can throw these. See overheating repair.
Why reinstalling Windows is the worst first move
It is the standard advice, and on a failing drive it is catastrophic. A Windows installation writes tens of gigabytes across the disk, including into the free space where your deleted-but-recoverable files still live, and it hammers the very sectors that were already unstable. If the blue screen was caused by a dying SSD, the reinstall is what makes your data unrecoverable.
The correct order is always the same: image the drive first, then diagnose. If the drive turns out to be healthy, you have lost an hour. If it does not, you have kept everything. See why we image before we diagnose.

What to check, in order
- Photograph the stop code and note what you were doing.
- Check the drive's SMART data. Reallocated sectors, pending sectors, or a media wear-out indicator climbing are the drive announcing its retirement.
- Check temperatures under load. Throttling machines throw hardware exceptions.
- Run a memory test overnight.
- Boot into Safe Mode. If it is stable there, you have a driver, not hardware.
- Only then consider a clean install — from a backup you have already verified.

When to stop and bring it in
Bring it in immediately if: the machine will not boot at all; the stop code mentions the boot device or the file system; the drive is making a new noise; or anything on the screen is preceded by a smell. Bring it in soon if crashes are becoming more frequent, or if they happen under load and the machine runs hot. And bring it in before you reinstall, not after — the second one costs three times more.

Is a blue screen a hardware or software problem?
The stop code decides. Driver-named crashes and post-update instability are software. Memory management errors, file-system errors, boot-device failures and machine-check exceptions are hardware until proven otherwise. Photograph the code before it disappears.
Should I reinstall Windows to fix blue screens?
Not until the drive has been checked and, ideally, imaged. If the crashes are caused by failing storage, a reinstall writes across the media and destroys recoverable data. Image first, diagnose second, reinstall third, if at all.
Can overheating cause a blue screen?
Yes. Machine-check exceptions and clock watchdog timeouts are frequently thrown by a CPU running at its thermal limit or by unstable power delivery under heat. If the machine runs hot and crashes under load, service the cooling before you buy any parts.
How much does it cost to fix a laptop that keeps blue screening?
