What laptop charging port repair really covers
The charging port is where your adapter meets the laptop, and it comes in two forms. The older and still very common one is the round DC-in barrel jack — a cylindrical socket that the charger's pin plugs into. On most laptops that jack does not sit directly on the mainboard; it lives on a small separate daughterboard, or on the end of a short pigtail flex cable that plugs into the mainboard. The newer form is USB-C or Thunderbolt charging, where the same slim connector carries power, data and often video at once. Both do the same job — feed the charger's voltage into the machine's power-delivery circuit — and both are physical connectors that wear, crack and work loose over years of plugging and unplugging.
Charging port repair is the work of restoring that connection. On a good day it is a clean swap of a worn daughterboard or pigtail jack. On a harder day it is re-soldering a jack whose pads have cracked on the board, or fitting a new USB-C connector under the microscope. And sometimes the port is perfect and the real fault sits deeper — a failed charging IC or a blown input fuse on the mainboard that leaves the whole board drawing nothing from a charger that is working fine. Those cases cross into board-level microsoldering. The single most valuable thing we do is tell the two apart before you pay for anything, because the cost, the time and the fix are completely different depending on which side of that line your fault falls.
The symptoms that point to a charging port fault
Charging faults tend to present in recognisable ways. None of these is a diagnosis on its own, but each one narrows things down long before the machine is opened:
- "Plugged in, not charging." The laptop sees a charger but the battery is not taking charge. This is the headline symptom, and it can come from a worn jack, a failing cable, or the charging circuit refusing to request charge.
- Charges only at a certain angle, or when the cable is wiggled. Prop the plug just so and the charge light comes on; move it and it drops. That intermittent behaviour is the classic signature of a loose jack or solder pads that have cracked where the connector meets its board.
- A loose, wobbly or sunken port. The connector moves when you touch it, feels spongy, or has been pushed back into the case after a knock or a trip over the cable. The mechanical mounting has failed.
- No charge at all. Nothing happens when you plug in — no light, no charge indicator. This can be a cleanly broken port, but it can also be a blown input fuse or a failed charging IC, which is why it always goes on the bench.
- Sparking, heat, or a burnt smell at the port. Stop using it immediately. A scorched or arcing connector points to a damaged pin or a short, and continuing to plug in risks turning a cheap repair into an expensive one.
- Battery drains while the charger is plugged in. The machine runs down even on mains power, meaning it is drawing from the battery instead of the adapter — the charge path is not delivering enough current, often a port or charging-circuit fault rather than the battery itself.

Our laptop charging port repair process, step by step
Every charging fault that reaches our bench follows the same order. The point of a fixed process is that the cheap, obvious causes are ruled out before anyone reaches for a soldering iron — most "dead charging ports" are something simpler than they look.
- Test the charger first. Before we open anything, we check the adapter and cable with a known-good charger of the correct wattage and a meter. A frayed cable or a worn adapter tip is the single most common cause we see, and it costs you nothing in labour to rule out. If a different charger fixes it, the laptop was never the problem.
- Bench current reading. The laptop goes onto a bench supply set to its rated input voltage with a known-good charger, and we read the current it draws. A port that makes contact but wobbles draws intermittently; a board with a blown fuse or a dead charging IC draws nothing at all. That one measurement separates a mechanical port fault from a charging-circuit fault before any disassembly.
- Inspect the port under the microscope. At 20–40× we look at the jack or USB-C connector for worn contacts, cracked solder pads where it meets its board, a bent shell, corrosion, or scorching. We photograph what we find so you see the fault, not just the invoice.
- Repair the connector. A worn jack on a daughterboard or pigtail flex is swapped for a new part. A jack whose pads have cracked is re-soldered and, where the pads have lifted, rebuilt. A damaged USB-C connector is removed and a new one fitted under the microscope with hot air and a preheater.
- Or trace the charging circuit. Where the port is sound but the board still will not charge, the fault is deeper — a blown input fuse or a failed charging IC. That is board-level microsoldering, which we carry out on the same bench and cover on our motherboard repair page. We tell you clearly when a job crosses that line, because the cost and time change with it.
- Reassemble, charge-test and hold. The machine is rebuilt, plugged in, and watched charging from empty under load — we confirm it holds a stable charge and that a USB-C port still carries data and video too, not just power, before it goes back to you with a written warranty on the job sheet.
One honest limit sits at the front of every quote. Where a port has been torn out and taken a chunk of the board's pads or traces with it, the repair becomes a board rebuild rather than a simple jack swap, and we tell you that on day one rather than after you have paid. In those cases we quote the realistic board-level cost and let you decide against the value of the machine.
Preventive tips: how to keep the charging port healthy
Most of the charging ports we repair failed for reasons that were, in hindsight, avoidable. A few habits meaningfully extend the life of a jack or USB-C port:
- Plug in gently and straight. Line the connector up and push it in square, not at an angle. Forcing a plug in crooked is what cracks the solder pads under a DC-in jack and bends the contacts inside a USB-C shell.
- Route the cable so it is not under tension. A charger cable pulled taut across a walkway levers on the port every time the laptop moves. Give it slack and keep it clear of foot traffic so a trip does not yank the jack out of the board.
- Use the correct-wattage genuine charger. An underpowered or poorly made adapter delivers dirty power and stresses both the port and the charging circuit behind it. Match the wattage your laptop expects and use a reputable charger.
- Do not yank the cable. Pulling a laptop away while it is still plugged in puts the whole strain on the connector. Move the machine, not the tethered cable.
- Unplug by the plug, not the cord. Grip the connector body to remove it. Tugging on the cable frays the wire and works the plug loose, and a frayed cable is one of the commonest "not charging" causes we see.
- Act on early warning signs. A port that has started to wobble, or a charge that only holds at a certain angle, is telling you the mounting is going. Handled early it is a small job; ignored, the pads crack further and the repair grows.

A charging port repair is priced by what the fault actually is, not by the word "port". A worn DC-in jack on its own daughterboard is usually a straightforward part swap and sits at the lower end. Why does my laptop say "plugged in, not charging"?
That message means the machine can see a charger but the battery is not receiving charge, and it has several causes. How do I know if it is the charging port or the charger that is faulty?
The quickest home test is a second known-good charger of the correct wattage: if a different charger works, the fault was the cable or adapter, not the laptop. If the symptom follows the machine regardless of charger — it only charges at a certain cable angle, when you wiggle the connector, or not at all — the fault is on the laptop side, usually the DC-in jack, the daughterboard it sits on, or the charging circuit. On our bench we confirm this properly by measuring the current the laptop draws from a controlled supply with a charger we know is good, which removes the charger from the equation entirely.
Can a broken charging port be repaired, or does the whole board have to be replaced?
Almost always repaired, not replaced. On many laptops the charging port lives on a small daughterboard or a pigtail flex cable, so replacing just that part is inexpensive and quick. Where the jack is soldered directly to the mainboard, we re-solder or replace the connector under the microscope rather than condemning the whole board. Only when the fault is deeper — a failed charging IC or a blown input fuse on the mainboard — does the work move to board-level microsoldering, and even then we repair the failed component rather than sell you a replacement board. Swapping an entire mainboard for a charging fault is almost never necessary.
How long does a laptop charging port repair take?

Do you repair USB-C and Thunderbolt charging ports?
Yes. USB-C and Thunderbolt charging ports are common on modern laptops and MacBooks, and they fail in their own ways — a connector cracked from a sideways knock, bent or worn contacts inside the shell, or a port that has stopped negotiating power delivery because the controller or a protection component behind it has failed. We replace the USB-C connector under the microscope where the connector itself is damaged, and where the port is electrically fine but power delivery has stopped we trace the fault back into the charging circuit. Because a single USB-C port often carries charging, data and video at once, we test all three after the repair, not just charging.
Will I lose my data during a charging port repair?
No. A charging port repair works on the power-input side of the laptop and does not touch your storage, so your files stay exactly where they are. The only time storage enters the conversation is when a charging fault has left a machine that will not power on at all and you need the data urgently before the repair is finished — in that case we can usually read or image the drive separately. Otherwise a port or charging-circuit repair carries no data risk, and we always confirm the machine boots and holds charge before it goes back to you.
