The fan bearing problem
More MSI machines arrive here with a fan complaint than with anything else. The symptom is a whine, a rattle, or a ticking that changes with load. The cause is a worn sleeve bearing. The consequence is worse than the noise: a fan whose bearing is worn spins slower under the same drive signal, but it still reports a tachometer count the firmware finds acceptable, so nothing warns you. Airflow collapses quietly.
We replace fans rather than oil them. Lubrication restores the noise floor for a few months and does nothing for the bearing clearance. A pair of fans on a Raider or Stealth is S$120–220 and it is the single most cost-effective thing an MSI owner can do at year two.
Thermal pads: the part everyone skips
A gaming laptop's VRM and VRAM are cooled through soft silicone pads of specified thickness — often 0.5mm, 1.0mm and 1.5mm on the same board. They harden and lose conductivity in a few years. A repaste that replaces the CPU compound and leaves the pads alone fixes a third of the problem and gets sold as a complete service.
Our thermal service replaces every pad to the correct measured thickness, cleans the fin stack, services or replaces the fans, and applies fresh compound — liquid metal on CPUs designed for it. On MSI machines we routinely log 15–20°C reductions in sustained load temperature and the return of clock speed that had quietly disappeared.
When it has gone too far: GPU reballing
Years of hot thermal cycling fatigue the solder balls under a BGA GPU package. The symptoms are artifacting under load, crashes in 3D, or fans spinning with no display at all. A reflow — heating the board until the existing solder softens — sometimes revives the machine for weeks. We do not sell it, because it is not a repair and it contaminates the joint for the proper one.
A reball removes the package, cleans the pads, applies fresh solder balls and new underfill, and reseats it. It is a day of skilled bench work and it costs from S$450. Before we quote one, we prove thermally that the cooling is not the cause — because artifacting from a clogged heatsink looks identical and costs a tenth as much.

MSI boards, batteries and screens
The boards are good. No-power faults follow the usual pattern: DC-in jack, charging IC, a shorted capacitor on a rail, occasionally a failed EC. All component-level, all S$120–300, all a fraction of a mainboard.
Batteries in Stealth and Raider machines are large (80–99Wh) and priced accordingly. Panels are high-refresh and must be matched by part number: fitting a 60Hz panel into a 240Hz Raider is a permanent, invisible downgrade. See panel matching.

Owning an MSI well
Listen to the fans. A new noise is a bearing, and a bearing is a warning. Book a full thermal service with pad replacement every eighteen months. Elevate the rear of the chassis so the intakes are not sealed against the desk. And if the screen starts artifacting in games, stop playing on it that evening rather than that month.

Is GPU reballing a permanent fix?
A properly done reball — package removed, pads cleaned, fresh balls, new underfill, correct reflow profile — is a real repair and we warrant it. A reflow, where the board is simply heated until the old solder softens, is not, and we do not offer it. If a shop quotes you a cheap 'reflow', you are buying weeks, not years.
My MSI fan is loud. Can you just clean it?
We will clean it, but if the noise is a whine or rattle rather than air rush, the bearing has worn and cleaning will not fix it. A worn fan moves far less air than its tachometer suggests, which is why temperatures climb without any warning appearing.
Do you replace thermal pads or just the paste?
Every pad, measured to the correct thickness for each component. A paste-only service on a gaming laptop addresses the CPU and leaves the VRM and VRAM cooling exactly as degraded as it was. We list the pad thicknesses used on your job sheet.
How much does an MSI screen cost to replace?
